The male Björk reaches new heights of sensitivity.

Even though we’ve grown used to Antony Hegarty’s tremulous delicate balloon of a voice it still has the ability to stop you in your tracks. Forget Diana and her alien hand this is the ultimate Marmite singer.

Some things have changed though since 2005’s Mercury winning I Am A Bird Now. Lyrically the world has opened up and become less biographical with nature a recurring subject matter (Another World, Daylight the Sun and Everglade).

The excellent musical arrangements and twisting melodies make this a far more positive experience than sceptics scared by Hegarty’s persona may fear – Kiss My Name could almost be jolly were it not for the suspicion that it’s probably about some Victorian child murder victim.

The Crying Light is an album that demands you listen closely and become consumed by – it’s not the sort of record you put on while you do the housework or go out for a jog that’s for sure. Stick with it and it’ll take you to another planet.
