Copenhagen experimentalists embrace pop for grown ups.

Aqua’s Barbie Girl aside, Denmark’s impact on pop history has been minimal. That could be about to change.

Despite being around since 2004, Efterklang’s third album marks their arrival as a mainstream band to be taken seriously. After years as something of lo-fi experimental concern opening track Modern Drift signals that these folk-pop leaning Danes have rediscovered themselves. Layered and subtle, the track rises towards a chorus that recalls Arcade Fire’s most uplifting sing-along Wake Up. It’s one of those songs that could be as massive as Snow Patrol’s Chasing cars or just disappear without recognition.

Elsewhere there is much more to admire. Alike recalls early Coldplay, before the world hated Chris Martin. Raincoats is addictive glitchy-folk electronica, while Scandinavian Love and Natural Tune make you think of a more upbeat Elbow with strings, trombones and choirs creating a mood that’s both delicate and triumphant.

About as far away as “life in plastic” as it is possible to get.

More to try:
Arcade Fire: Neon Bible
Noah And The Whale: The First days Of Spring
Elbow: Seldom Seen Kid
Talk Talk: Spirit Of Eden
