Grating new material from one of hip-hop’s brightest stars
Although most Wu-Tang Clan members have produced decent solo material, Ghostface Killah’s first album Ironman counts as one of the best made – and, given that on this latest collection he’s roped in other leading lights Method Man and Raekwon to contribute, you’d expect big things. Sadly, The Big Doe Rehab fails to deliver.
Old-school soul samples have long been Ghostface’s forte but here – on Supa GFK particularly – they’re overdone, thrashed out to the point of discordance and jarring with his distinctive, strident rapping style. While tracks such as Toney Sigel, Shakey Dogg and Killa Lipstick are good enough, showcasing Ghostface’s violent street storytelling and honour-among-gangsters morality – on the whole, this is patchy, grating work, nothing like we’ve come to expect.
