Josh Pyke: Memories & Dust review

Artist
Josh Pyke
Label
Island
Release date
21st May 2007
Genre
Rock

Mature debut offering from hotly-tipped singer-songwriter.

Josh Pyke's first album, coming hot on the heels of plaudits heaped on his head by press and fans alike, is a misleading beast. While you'd be forgiven for expecting little aside from the usual acoustic singer-songwriter fayre, this collection of songs has new ideas aplenty and is delivered in an undoubtedly accomplished manner.

The Australian troubadour is in possession of a great voice and a nice line in smart, cheeky lyrical flair (particularly on album opener Lines On Palms and the upbeat, nostalgic Forever Song) and musically seems to draw on influences such as Tom Petty and Warren Zevon. Marrying the upbeat style of these heartfelt rockers with rich vocal harmonies aplenty works well for him - overall this album is a complete and confident representation of a great new talent. There's not a bad track on here, and it should appeal to the indie radio rockers and MOR fans alike. Recommended.
