The young Georgian’s career looks rescued as she leaves the man who got it started
In a recent interview with Virgin Media, Katie Melua confirmed that this third album would be her final collaboration with songwriter Mike Batt. On the evidence of the movies-themed Pictures, it appears a very sensible career move for the Georgian chanteuse. Mired once more in the twee and inoffensive bluesy folk of her previous output, Batt again gives Melua truly dreadful lyrics even she sounds embarrassed to sing.
Amongst the toe-curling gems on offer here are "Douglas Fairbanks he was so handsome, he wore a moustache, must have had much cash" on irritating opener Mary Pickford. Ronseal should also be expecting royalties from a track called (no, seriously) What It Says On The Tin. Fortunately, tracks sans Batt show promise. The lovelorn and wistful What I Miss About You and mariachi swing of Dirty Dice, both written with Andrea McEwan, showcase both a world-weary and, would you believe it, sexy tone to Melua’s voice. Perfect Circle, penned with Molly McQueen, is also an overdue move away from the Eva Cassidy impersonations - she sounds relaxed, flirty and, best of all, youthful – as she should at 23 years old. Melua has outgrown her mentor but her future looks more assured as she goes it alone.
