Not the most memorable name in pop, but fans of late Nineties beat combo Dodgy will recognise it as the moniker of said band's frontman and main songwriter. Clark has pretty much been out of the limelight since Dodgy folded in 2000, and those expecting something akin to the band's excellent hit single Staying Out For The Summer will be quite surprised by 21st Century Man.
Sounding remarkably like Liverpool's Very Own - John Lennon - Clark's voice carries songs that are in the main cheery, occasionally thoughtful and poetic, and sometimes a little bland in places.
Tunes like Sometimes and Nothing's Free have an interesting Beatles-esque quality, redolent of the Sixties, as indeed do a number of other songs on the album. The killer track, if that is the right word when talking about an album where everything is nice and warm and cuddly, is the slightly dark Still Hurting Now.
It's good that the man is back with his own music again, and while the record is a bit of a curate's egg eg.good in parts, it has an energy that eventually seeps through and makes its presence felt.
