Eighties throwbacks Glenn Gregory and Keith Lowndes (of Heaven 17 and ABC respectively)
approach Joy Division's hallowed classic with the same ear for a radio-friendly, yet
contemplative, rendition as Gary Jules' Mad World cover. We're talking reverb - and
lots of it - hanging upon a plodding piano and suitably sombre vocal performance. Most
critics have declared it a triumph which enters sacred territory on tiptoe and thus
manages not to cause offense to Joy Division's legacy. More realistically, though, it's
a fairly unambitious cover which admittedly goes a little further from the original
than Squarepusher's 2002 attempt (on Do You Know Squarepusher), but still comes over sounding
like over-produced karaoke in the process.
