Rap megastar flirts with self-parody, again, and pulls it off
"I never forget about what I love the most," says Snoop in his intro to this album, "and that's making music." Given the amount of love that Snoop has for a lot of other things - dropping it like it's hot, gin and juice, keeping a blue flag hanging out his backside, and being a mother-loving P.I.M.P. - you can assume that there's a lot of affection going into these songs. Basically, we wouldn't really care if this was a collection of lute madrigals with Snoop drawling about weed over the top of them - he'd still be worth listening to.
If you have the money and status to hire the best producers in the world, then you can assume that your music is going to sound pretty good - and Snoop steps up to the beats with the kind of aplomb you'd expect. The fantastic French electro-pop meets Teddy Riley-esque soul of SD Is Out is an album highlight, complete with mutated beats and hisses, the hilarious Sexual Eruption (is this guy for real?) another moment of genius. There are a couple of Snoop-by-numbers moments of slight boredom, but they're quickly eclipsed by gloriously baffling tracks like Staxxx In My Jeans. Good stuff from one of rap's most interesting characters.
