Last year, the government reduced the VAT rate to 15%. We passed this saving on to you in two ways.
First we calculated any new calls you made using the reduced VAT rate. Secondly, we calculated the saving on monthly and one-off charges and added these as a credit to your monthly bill.
That means, overall, the cost of your calls would have appeared slightly less and you would have noticed a little extra credit on your bill from month to month.
As of 1st of January 2010, the government will be changing the VAT rate back to 17.5%.
Below are the new calling rates from 1st of January 2010.
Got fibre optic cable? Cable calling costs
Get your services down your phoneline? National calling costs
You’ll see your final VAT credit on your bill in December 2009. It’ll appear in the 'Refunds and Adjustments' section of your bill and is called 'VAT credit’.
After this, your bill will return to normal.
Q: When is VAT reverting to it’s previous rate?
A: The VAT rate is changing back to 17.5% on 1st January 2010.
Q: How have Virgin Media customers been informed of this change?
A: All our customers will receive a message with their December bill (E-bill customers via email and Paper bill customers a
bill message) mentioning the VAT change.
Q: When will I receive my final VAT credit?
A: You will receive the final credit on your December 2009 bill.
Q: Why are my telephone calls, which were made in December ’09, charged with VAT at 17.5%?
A: Virgin Media charge VAT when a call is billed, so any December telephone calls billed in January 2010 will be charged with VAT at 17.5%. Don’t forget that when VAT went down to 15% on 1st December 2008, telephone calls made in November, but billed in December were charged with VAT at 15%.
