Big Brother is celebrating it's tenth anniversary this year, but it has had to evolve throughout the decade in order to keep viewers watching.

From secret rooms to secret housemates the show's producers have hatched all kinds of plots to stir up trouble in the house and make things exciting.

:: Split house

By series three of BB, the novelty of watching people using the bathroom had faded and the show's chiefs wanted to spice things up a little. The housemates woke up one morning to find the house had been separated down the middle by prison bars. On one side of the house contestants lived in luxury with hot showers and treats to eat, while on the other side housemates had to survive on basic rations and shower in ice cold water.

But living on the 'poor' side all got too much for housemate Jonny who broke into the 'rich' side in the middle of the night with a blanket on his head and stole some chocolate from the fridge.

:: African exchange trip

In Big Brother series four, housemate Cameron accepted the challenge of being sent on a week's exchange to Big Brother Africa. African BB housemate Gaetano spent time in the Big Brother UK house while Cameron was away.

Producers also shocked housemates by sending contestant Jon Tickle back into the house, after he had been booted off the show. The science geek had been a hit with viewers, despite being voted out of the house, but his reappearance worried the other contestants who thought he was still eligible to win the show and the £70,000 prize.

:: The bedsit

The slogan for the fifth series was "Big Brother Gets Evil" and while it was probably the most eventful year, it almost backfired for Endemol when one of their twists sparked a fight in the house.

Big Brother staged a fake eviction in which viewers voted for two contestants to be moved into a secret bedsit, where they could watch the rest of the housemates, who all thought they had left the show for good.

Emma and Michelle were the chosen two, and after secretly watching the other contestants, they were eventually sent back into the house during a surprise party, with their heads hidden under platters on a table of food.

Some of the housemates were less than thrilled to see the pair back, and when an argument between Emma and Vincent turned nasty, producers cut the live footage and some worried viewers called the police.

In what has now become known as Fight Night, Emma was moved back into the bedsit and was then removed from the house for her own safety. All the housemates had to be questioned by police and Big Brother history was made.

:: The secret garden

In series six, all the housemates were expecting a similar experience to the bedsit. So Big Brother double-bluffed them by having a secret garden in which three extra housemates were sent to live for a week, with only fig leaves to wear. Viewers voted to choose who out of the beautiful Orlaith, geeky Eugene and mouthy Kinga they wanted to vote into the main house. The viewers voted for Orlaith and Eugene, but Kinga got her moment, replacing Orlaith after she quit the house on day 65. And Kinga made the most of time on the show by performing a now infamous act with a wine bottle which certainly got her noticed.

Another big twist of the year was the prize money conundrum midway through the final week. Big Brother called a housemate to the Diary Room and Eugene was first to respond. He was offered £50,000 of the £100,000 cash price then and there. If he refused the final prize money would double to £200,000. He took the cash.

:: Golden tickets

Series seven included all kinds of tricks from Big Brother and plenty of drama. There was a house next door and housemate Dawn was thrown out by Big Brother after a week for using code to communicate with the outside world.

But the most notable curve ball from BB was the golden tickets. For the first three weeks of the show, Channel 4 conducted a promotion in conjunction with Nestle offering 100 golden tickets hidden inside KitKat chocolate bars, like in Roald Dahl's Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.

Members of the public finding these tickets could win a place in the Big Brother house without having to audition. They were invited to a television show where one of them, Susie Verrico, was chosen to enter by housemate Aisleyne picking a ball out of a machine at random.

:: Girls only, plus Ziggy

In the eighth series, 11 women entered the Big Brother house to discover there were no men for them to flirt with. Then on the third day, hunky ex boyband member Ziggy entered the lions den. He soon struck up a romance with Chanelle which proved to be the most histrionic of BB relationships, with the pair getting together and then breaking up throughout their time in the Big Brother house.

:: Heaven and Hell

The most recent series saw the Big Brother house divided into Heaven and Hell with some living in luxury and others living in basic conditions in B Block. Housemates on the hellish side of the fence could not use the pool, had to endure cold showers and had to earn the right to nominate.

Big Brother also introduced the Head of House. Various challenges were carried out to win the role, and the Head of House was immune from nomination and did not have to compete in the shopping tasks.

Big Brother also had a jail where housemates were sent if they broke any rules, such as discussing nominations.
