Many of you will have added "healthy eating" to your list of New Year resolutions but we all know that it's easier said than done. Low fat, no added sugar, GDA, probiotic, enriched, traffic lights, lower salt...the list of things to take into consideration goes on. With so many choices on the shelves, healthy food choices can be confusing when you're grocery shopping. To make your trip round the aisles that bit easier, Tesco have devised a system to show you how each food can fit into your own healthy diet – the Healthy Living Tracker.
The tool allows you to tally Totals, values given to food based not only on the nutrition content of a food but also on the type of food and its importance in a healthy diet. Fruit and vegetables, for example, are key in any healthy eating plan so they are calculated to have low Totals Values. Unhealthier choices like those high in saturated fat, refined carbohydrate or salt, for example, are designed to have higher Totals Values than alternatives that might be higher in unsaturated fat or wholegrain carbs, or lower in salt.
Based on your weight, height, age and activity, you can use the tool to calculate your personal Totals Allowance and then choose your foods to reach that allowance. Healthy eating will soon become a natural part of your lifestyle as you choose nutrient-dense foods, earn Totals through exercise or manage your allowance to celebrate a special occasion without breaking your diet.
