This year, come to your senses and pop the big question to the one that rocks your world. With 2008 being a leap year it means the ladies can get in on the action and organise a special proposal. Whether man, woman or beast we've got some do's and don'ts on how to make your proposal memorable…
Do's:
- Propose simply because you want to - you love them and want to spend the rest of your life with them. Not because of convenience, pressure or financial reasons.
- Ask one of the in-laws for permission. This time-honoured tradition will earn you respect and extra brownie points.
- If you're unsure of what engagement ring to buy then simply ask advice from a family member or friend. Ideally pick it out yourself so that your partner is the first one to see it, but keep the receipt!
- Try and share your exciting plans with as few people as possible, giving you and your partner the chance to announce your happy news together.
- In the run up to your proposal, make sure any niggly issues between you and your partner are resolved.
- Most importantly be yourself - make your proposal honest, heartfelt and passionate.
Don'ts:
- Don't propose spontaneously when you're drunk. It won't be taken seriously.
- Propose in your first week/night/hour you've met. You have to know someone very well to be sure you're happy with spending the rest of your life with them.
- Avoid starting your proposal with insensitive clichés such as "We might as well", "We're not getting any younger", "I've sowed my wild oats..."
