VM: So, do you agree with the tournament continuing?

PT: "Well, I think it has to. It's undoubtedly cricket's darkest time, but we just have to let the police get on with their investigations, despite all the speculation that's going around. And perhaps the best way for them to get on with that is while the cricket is happening."

VM: How did you feel as a player during the match-fixing scandals of the late '90s?

PT: "Well, all I can say is that I was never approached as a player, and I've never played in an England team where I had any suspicions about match-fixing.

You do hear about rumours about people saying they've been approached, but I can only comment on my own experiences and I'm pretty sure it never happened in any team I played in."

VM: Moving back to the tournament, what do you think of England's performances so far?

PT: "Sluggish! It's a slow start. But at least they're into the Super 8s, though being two points down on the others already is going to make things a little tricky.

They've got the job done against Canada and Kenya - I'd have been pretty disappointed if we hadn't - but they've got a lot of work to do to progress any further."

VM: How was your World Cup experience in 1992?

PT: "Ah, it was brilliant! We lost to Pakistan in the final, which I didn't actually play in, but apart form that it was fantastic!

It's also worth mentioning that Pakistan looked pretty ropey early in that tournament, so it's not the end of the world that England have started badly. And maybe the Aussies have peaked too early!"
