Scotland have had ODI status since the beginning of 2006, and remain an infant in the greater scheme of world cricket. Winners of the ICC Intercontinental Cup in 2004, they have not had much success against the more established cricketing nations.

This will be their second World Cup, and while some would say that they are just there to make up the numbers and increase the number of games for revenue, there is no doubt that the experience gained will aid them in the years to come. They find themselves in Group A with Australia, South Africa and the Netherlands, and will be based on the island of St Kitts.

Craig Wright made his debut for Scotland in 1997 and has now played more than 100 times for his country, even if few of those games were at a high level. An accomplished batsman and useful medium pacer, Wright's experience will be key to the Scottish cause.

At 37 years old, Dougie Brown is easily the most experienced Scot at a high level having played nine ODIs for England and made over 12500 runs and taken over 850 wickets at first-class and list A cricket. A genuine all-rounder, Brown played for Warwickshire for many years before coaching Namibia at the last World Cup and then moving on to play for the country of his birth.

While he has only played eight official ODIs against lesser opposition, Ryan Watson can nonetheless boast an average of close to 50 and a strike rate of 86. He inhabits the key batting position of number three and has won plenty of games for Scotland off his own bat.

Verdict

They have a good chance of beating the Netherlands, but won't get out of their group.
