The Thriller in Manila
Locked at 1-1 in their personal duel, Ali and Frazier met for the last time in a brutal final contest in Manila. It is still regarded by many as the greatest heavyweight bout of all time which left both fighters physically exhausted. In a fight that swung to-and-fro, Ali landed nine unanswered punches to Frazier’s head in the 14th round, punches that Frazier failed to see through closing eyes. To Ali’s relief and against his opponent’s pleas, Frazier’s trainer Eddie Futch stopped the fight. "It was like death. The closest thing to dying that I know of," Ali later said.
