Now in his fourteenth season of Grand Prix racing, received wisdom has it that DC is marking time until his eventual retirement - but the Scot is having none of that.
He has been bullish about the Red Bull team's prospects, and although his days of making a championship challenge are probably over he believes he is still capable of winning races.
The Red Bull team made good progress last year, and Coulthard showed in Bahrain that he still has a racer's edge.
DC could yet make it to the podium again but unless the Renault engine improves it may be a frustrating year for him.
