Robbie Kerr interview

A1GP star Robbie Kerr

It's motorsport's answer to the World Cup, and it provides a multi-coloured, multi-cultural grid like no other - it's the world of A1GP.

Britain's Robbie Kerr is one of the top drivers in this exciting category, and here he gives us an introduction to it.

VM:Why did you choose to race in A1GP?

Robbie Kerr: I was contacted by John Surtees and put forward to represent Great Britain, I was invited to a shoot-out at Brands Hatch with several other drivers. We drove an old Formula 3000 car, just to see how you work with team and to assess you. A couple of months later he contacted me and told me I'd been chosen as one of the two drivers to represent GB. At that particular time I didn't have a fixed drive, so it was a fantastic opportunity.

VM:What makes A1 GP different?

Robbie Kerr: It isn't really a feeder category, it's a World Cup of motorsport, much like the football World Cup. The idea is to pick drivers to represent each country and get behind them, and then see which country wins, - it comes down to teamwork and whoever is sitting in the driver's seat.

VM:How much is the atmosphere like its football equivalent?

Robbie Kerr: Yeah, when you're out on the circuit the gloves are off, and you're out to do everything you can to be on that top step of the podium. Once the racing stops, as in football, people socialise and it is probably a more relaxed atmosphere. The noise when I took the lead (at Donington Park) was incredible.

You really feel are driving for your nation. It's like stepping out on a football pitch with an England shirt on, giving your all for your nation.

VM:Can you go on to move into Formula 1?

Robbie Kerr: F1 is the pinnacle, the top of the sport, and obviously the task there is very hard. It's a pyramid effect, there are less and less seats the further you go up and the more professional it becomes, and so you just have to keep pushing yourself on any world stage to perform and show what you can do. When everyone else is off signing their contracts, we're off driving.
