Welcome to the galaxy!

Frighteningly, it's now exactly 30 years since Star Wars first burst on to cinema screens. In honour of this landmark birthday, here's a look at some of the real-world destinations that doubled for distant planets in the movie series. May the force be with you!

The stark deserts of Tunisia were used as Tatooine (above), the dusty home planet of heroic Luke Skywalker and his clan. Some of the curious rock-built structures seen on screen are actual local buildings, used to store grain in the scorching desert heat. Fans can visit many of the films' locations here, and will be delighted to find that the fictional planet takes its name from that of the area - Tatouine in French, or Al-Tatooine in Arabic.
