Scam: The fake receptionist
What is it?: "Sorry to call you but we can't process your credit card for the room. Please can you give me your card details again?"
What's the scam: A call from reception in the middle of the night can easily confuse a tired traveller into giving out personal information. Unfortunately the call is bogus and actually from an identity thief.
Where: First reported in Shanghai but now worldwide
Scam-o-meter rating: 9/10
How to avoid: Politely suggest that you'll sort out the problem with reception first thing in the morning and lock your wallet in the hotel room safe. You never can be too careful.
