The Orient Express it isn't, but all the more charming for it. This rail link is a symbol of unity for Vietnam (hence the name) as it chugs south from Vietnam's stately capital, Hanoi, to the bustling metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City. There's plenty to see en route from Hanoi's elegant French colonial charm and café culture to central Vietnam gems like Hue's Imperial Citadel, Perfume River and elaborate mausoleums. Hoi An is a relaxing river town with tailors to tempt even the thriftiest shopper. A stint at Nha Trang or Mui Ne beach will prepare you for the colourful chaos of Ho Chi Minh City.
