The quintessential American road trip is a reality along the Pacific Coast Highway from southern California to San Francisco, where spectacular beaches and coastline make this so much more than just a drive. You can stop off at the lovely town of Carmel (Clint Eastwood was once its mayor), feel like you're in the Med in Santa Barbara, go bohemian in Cambria's restaurant and shop-filled artists' colony or unwind to the cool classy tunes of Monterey's jazz festival. Handy hints: if you want to drive on the ocean side of the road, drive north to south. If you're not a fan of twisty roads and absence of guardrails, drive south to north!
