Banff, Canada

In the Rocky Mountains of Canada lies the picturesque little town of Banff, and nestled against its snow-draped slopes is the ultimate adventure for skiing enthusiasts.

Situated in the Banff National Park, just a 90 minute drive from Calgary, Banff boasts not only a setting plucked straight from a Hollywood Western but also facilities and activities which have proven popular with holiday-makers from all over the world.

Skiing

Patrons of all ages can enjoy a day on the slopes, which is divided into three main areas - Banff Mount Norquay for beginners, Sunshine Village for intermediates and Lake Louise. Most of the skiers are found at Lake Louise, simply because its panoramic views are second to none and good snow records provide a fulfilling challenge.

Skiers start at a base of 5,350ft on Banff's Mount Norquay, but can go as high as 7,000ft. There are two fixed Quad lifts, one HS Quad and 1 double chairlift. For those who do not like heights, there is also a surface lift. The interchangeable lift ticket lets you hop from area to area, giving you an incredible choice of skiing.

There are 31 runs spread across 190 acres, the vast majority falling into the intermediate or advanced skier category. Just 20% of the runs would be considered right for beginners, 36% for intermediates and 44% for advanced. Snowboarders are also spoilt for choice with the variety of runs.

When to go

Droves of holiday makers flood in mainly during the Canadian holidays mid-March to mid-April, the English February half term and during New Year and Easter celebrations. The last ten days of January traditionally sees the resort's famous Winterfest, with plenty of events on offer.

Aprés ski

When night time falls, children can be left in the excellent care of Banff's childcare staff, while parents unwind in Wild Bill's Legendary Saloon or the tantalizing Hot Springs. The aprés ski is excellent, with over 50 bars and over 100 restaurants. If you don't want to ski there is plenty to do, from heli-sightseeing to dog-sled adventures, canyon icewalks to ice-fishing.
