Located in the heart of the French Alps, Chamonix (or Chamonix Mont Blanc, as it likes to be known as) is among the most aesthetically appealing resorts in Europe, with skiers also attracted to the wide range of off-piste activities.
Expansive glacier systems, vast powder slopes, steep couloirs and tree skiing keep thrill-seekers happy all season long.
The wide variety of blue, green, red and black runs and intricate lift system mean that visitors can vary their skiing experience to a great degree, moving about the slopes with ease from peak to peak, with the stunning backdrop of Mont Blanc, Western Europe's highest mountain. Chamonix also offers one of the world's longest runs through the Vallée Blanche at 22km.
It is a good idea to initially ask for supervision, usually in the form of a high mountain guide, at Chamonix as the off-piste action can be dangerous to the inexperienced. That being said, regulated skiing is plentiful, with slopes of all grades available to visitors.
Chamonix is immensely popular with British tourists, not only for its huge scope in terms of skiing, but for what it offers to its visitors once the skis have been hung up for the day.
The town is big, bustling and abuzz with restaurants, shops and cafes (several of which offer Internet access) as well as the recently renovated Cinema Vox, which screens both French and international films. Most of the films either have English subtitles or are in English.
When night descends, a new breed of fun-seeker emerges. Young people love Chamonix, its selection of nightclubs are full of party folk all season through. Among the more well-known ones are Ice Rock Caf and Wild Wallabies.
The size and promise of large crowds on an annual basis attracts some of the UK's top DJs to make the trip across the English Channel to be at the resort during peak times.
This resort has grown so much over the years due to its popularity; there are now 70 hotels in the town itself. Budget accommodation is also available and with 13 campsites for the summer months, Chamonix always has somewhere to put its visitors.
