Morzine-Avoriaz, France

Situated in the Dranse River Valley, Morzine-Avoriaz rests at an altitude of 1,000m and is the largest of the 14 resorts found in Les Portes du Soleil (Gateway to the Sun), the most expansive ski area in the world.

Skiing

The two resorts together form the heart of the Portes du Soleil, the world's largest international ski area with 660 km of linked pistes and 220 lifts. The variety of runs make it suitable for skiers of all levels, from beginners through to advanced.

The Morzine Les-Gets sector is directly accessible from the village centre and links the Pléney and Nyon to Morzine, Chavannes and Mont Chéry in Les Gets, offering 107 km of ski runs between 1,000m and 2,020m in altitude.

The French Ski School is one of the best in the world. It boasts 140 accredited instructors to help you progress at your own pace and guide you through the area. The school offers instruction in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, freeriding, telemarking, or carving.

The children's facilities are located in the centre of Avoriaz and Morzine, and are very close to the adult slopes. L'Outa is a ski/daycare program for children aged two months to four years and Les Penguins Malins offers ski lessons and daycare for children aged four to 12.

There are endless off-piste opportunities, and three snow parks with a variety of kickers, hips and rails for all levels and two half pipes.

The resort

Morzine is a traditional alpine town full of charm with an excellent selection of shops, restaurants and bars.

Sister resort Avoriaz, in contrast, is purpose built. It is perched on a ridge overlooking Morzine from a height of 1800m and offers guaranteed snow throughout the season with lifts taking skiers up to heights of 2500m.

Other activities

While the majority of Morzine's visitors come for the amazing downhill skiing, the area offers plenty of other winter activities. These include 97 km of superbly maintained cross-country trails for a great family outing into the woods, while the Le Palais des Sports comprises of a modern skating rink, spas, a video arcade, and a curling track.

Other activities offered on location or nearby are: touring, a sports hall, an indoor ice rink, bowling, concerts, curling, ice hockey, paragliding, parapente, parascending, a physical training course, sleigh rides, snowshoeing, tennis, winter walks, saunas, Jacuzzis, cinemas, and night clubs.
