Bormio was first built by the Romans as a spa town and has risen to become one of the most popular resorts in Italy. It is nestled in the Rhaetian Alps near the Swiss and Austrian borders and offers holiday-makers the opportunity to explore the little town's cobblestone streets, churches, and clock towers. It will also host the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2005.
Bormio's ski area covers some 50km of pistes, and the lift pass also covers the adjacent, although unlinked, skiing at Santa Caterina and San Colombano. To ski on these adjoining slopes, you will need to get the local bus. The Bormio ski pass also covers one day's skiing in Livigno, about an hour's drive away.
Most of this will start at Bormio and branch in all directions, including upwards. There are plenty of slopes for the less experienced skier, including the total beginner. Good, intermediate runs are also close at hand, making the area a most acceptable one for most holidaying skiers.
True experts will be delighted if they arrive in the resort after a fresh snowfall, as Bormio provides plenty of slopes to experience the "steep and deep" but this is a resort that is better suited to beginners and intermediates.
The resort is packed during December through to April offering 54 hotels plus apartments and private homes.
The area also offers its tourists the possibility to visit the biggest National Park in Italy. And of course there are numerous walking tracks, for all skills, easy ones and demanding ones as well as climbing routes.
Mountain bikers will find endless opportunities to cycle through the mountains.
The resort, which is only 250km from Milan, is divided into two distinct parts - the old, pedestrian centre and the outlying new developments. The centre is beautiful and full of architectural charm, while offering 21 trails into amazing mountain scenery. It is also the only ski resort with genuine Roman baths.
Recreational activities include discos, restaurants, pizzerias, bars and night clubs but Bormio is not the place if you're after a hectic nightlife during the week.
