Lake Tahoe, which sits in a valley at an elevation of 6,229 feet, is a masterpiece of nature. The Lake Tahoe region offers more places to ski and snowboard than any other destination in North America.
The Lake Tahoe ski region is actually made up of fourteen resorts, namely Alpine Meadows, Boreal, Diamond Peak, Donner Ski Ranch, Heavenly, Homewood, Kirkwood, Mt. Rose, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Soda Springs, Squaw Valley, Sugar Bowl and Tahoe Donner. Many of the resorts also offer cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, tubing, and other snow sports.
Surrounding resorts boast in excess of 100 inches and often over 200 inches of snow. During most years you can make morning turns and still have time for an afternoon round of golf or an afternoon on the lake.
Alpine Meadows Ski Resort offers skiers and snowboarders 2000 acres of the most varied terrain in Tahoe: six bowls, steep chutes, gentle glades and endless cruisers. The resort is always being renovated, so each year, expect more and more from it.
It is located six miles northwest of Tahoe City and introduces a brand new 600-foot long superpipe and a terrain park with more than 25 hits, rails, and quarter pipes. With a vertical drop of just 1797ft, it has fairly gentle slopes, about 25% of which are suitable for beginners and 40% for intermediate skiers.
Of the 100 runs, 35% would be considered advanced and none fall into the expert category. There are 114 lifts to take skiers up the mountain, servicing around 2000 acres of skiable mountain terrain.
Alpine skiing in Lake Tahoe usually continues well past the traditional Easter closing, lasting into May and sometimes June.
Lake Tahoe is ideally situated 320 km east of San Francisco in the High Sierra, the snowiest region on the North American continent, where snow is known to have fallen in every month of the year.
Tahoe Basin was formed about five to ten million years ago by the rising and falling of the land due to shifting geologic faults. This breathtakingly blue lake is so clear that in some places objects can be seen to depths of 75 feet.
Wintertime in Tahoe brings Snowfest, the West's largest winter carnival with torchlight parades, canine fashion shows and icy swims in Tahoe's frigid waters. Nightlife varies depending on the resort, but Heavenly is lively, while Squaw Valley is more relaxed.
