You may have noticed the number of movies with the tag “3D” recently.
In fact, you’ve probably donned special glasses to watch Disney films like Up, and heard the coos of children as objects fly into your faces from the screen. Now, all that’s coming to your living room – and Channel 4’s 3D week is just the start of it. Sky HD have announced the launch of the UK’s first 3D channel next year. You’ll need a new 3D-compatible telly, and you’ll still need special glasses – for the time being. But Sky insist the results will be spectacular."3D is a genuinely 'seeing is believing' experience, making TV come to life as never before," raves Sky MD Brian Sullivan. So what will they be showing? It won’t just be cartoons: you’ll be able to watch specially-filmed 3D movies, entertainment and documentaries. Alongside film, which is already ahead on the 3D trend, sport seems to be the biggest draw at the moment.Sky have already shown Gladiators in 3D, as well as Liverpool FC vs Marseille UEFA Champions last November. There’s also talk of 3D Olympic coverage, which would save us all a trip to the stadium.Meantime, you can watch plenty of broader 3D entertainment on Channel 4, including footage of magicians introduced by Derren Brown and movies like Friday 13th Part III.If Sky follow suit, we soon could be going four-eyed for 3D 24-7.
Virgin Media customers can watch Channel 4's The Queen in 3D and Derren Brown's 3D Magic Spectacular using Catch up TV and TV Choice. Also available on TV Choice will be the 3D episode of Chuck which aired on Virgin1 in August this year.
