So, how on earth are the BBC going to top the last series of Doctor Who? The big finale featured the temporary death of the Doctor AND the creation of a parallel universe. What are they going to do in series 6, have him reveal himself to be the Messiah? Perhaps not, but here are some more likely ideas going round the rumour-mill…
1. 'Eric Cantona is playing a baddie!' It could very well be a case of Doctor Ooh Aah Cantona, if things go Matt Smith’s way. He’s apparently eager to bag the French footy legend for the next series, perhaps playing some kind of evil alien overlord. If anything, this is TOO good an idea. It’ll be the biggest example of the hero being totally overshadowed by the villain since Alan Rickman made Kevin Costner look practically invisible in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves…

2. 'Who is River Song?' River Song, played by her off ER, has inspired frenzied speculation. Will she turn to be the Doctor's wife, as many nerds predict, or is she a Time Agent like Captain Jack? And what's the identity of the man she murdered? She referred to him as 'the best man I've ever known' - was it the Doctor or even the Master? More River Song rumours
3. 'The silence are aliens!' Now there’s a sentence that’ll make absolutely no sense to Who newbies. To recap, the phrase 'silence will fall' has been one of the running themes of the last series, but show bigwig Steven Moffat has heavily hinted it’s not a case of 'what is the silence?' but rather 'who ARE the silence?' A new species of bad guy, perhaps?
4. 'There’ll be a new Doctor!' Forget the Daleks or the Master – some naysayers are suggesting Matt Smith could fall foul of the most powerful villains of all: TV execs. Disappointing ratings have led bookies to slash odds on Matt being replaced by a new star – with James Corden an apparent contender. We shudder to imagine it…

Doctor Who series six airs Saturdays at 7pm on BBC One
