The first Avatar film broke boundaries for its spectacular visual effects and became one of the highest-grossing films of all time. And the sequel Avatar: The Way Of Water made a triumphant return to cinemas last year, scooping the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

The original film ended with human marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) turning his back on his fellow colonisers on the moon of Pandora and transferring his consciousness into a Na’vi body.

A sequel to James Cameron’s cinematic masterpiece was announced just a year later, but fans had to wait 13 years for the follow up to hit cinema screens. Check out the trailer below.

As you can see, it’s all been worth the wait. The sequel follows Jake and his life mate Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) as they battle with the challenges of parenthood and raising a family together. They have three children and have also adopted the teenage Kiri (voiced by Sigourney Weaver), who was born from the first avatar of Dr Grace Augustine, and a human boy named Miles.

Peace and harmony within their family is short-lived as humans once again invade in the hope of colonising Pandora. The Earth is no longer habitable for humans and Pandora is also home to a new, extremely rare and expensive substance. Plus, the humans still clearly hold a bitter grudge against Jake for betraying them.

In a desperate bid to survive, Jake and the family escape and seek refuge with the water-dwelling Metkayina, before an almighty war breaks out.

Directed by legendary filmmaker James Cameron, it’s a cinematic treat that’s sure to blow you away. The aquatic imagery is simply breathtaking and the whole production is a truly immersive experience.

As well as scooping the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, it was also nominated for Best Sound, Best Production Design and Best Picture.
