April premieres on Sky Cinema

April premieres on Sky Cinema

All the best new premieres to watch on Sky Cinema this month, including Academy Award-winning drama with Oppenheimer and some outrageous doggos in Strays

By Virgin TV Edit

The two biggest box-office hits of recent years are heading your way on Sky Cinema this month. After sneaky feminist comedy Barbie premieres on Good Friday, Oppenheimer lands on Friday 12 April, giving you a chance to enjoy the winner of seven Oscars from your sofa (and at your own pace).

There’s animated fun for youngsters this month in the form of adorable animal flick 10 Lives and belated but welcome superhero sequel Megamind Vs The Doom Syndicate. You might want to send the kids to bed before firing up Strays, though, a movie with talking dogs that are decidedly not adorable in the slightest.

Anuvahood creator and star Adam Deacon is back with Sumotherhood, while BlackBerry is a fascinating and oddly comic look at the meteoric success and drastic decline of the titular handheld device. And if you’ve been too busy over the past few months to keep up with all the new premieres on Sky Cinema, scroll down to see our round-up of all the latest titles available in On Demand.

Don’t forget, you can watch hundreds of Sky Cinema titles on up to five devices with the awesome Virgin TV Go app at no extra cost to Sky Cinema subscribers. It’s the perfect way to take a bit of movie magic with you. Find out more about the Virgin TV Go app here.

Read on to find out what’s new on Sky Cinema in April.

Barbie

Available from Good Friday in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12

There have been few films in the history of cinema that have captured the world’s collective attention as much as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. The fact the movie, based on the iconic plastic doll, captured our adoration as well demonstrates this wasn’t just clever marketing. It’s the real deal, as shown by nominations for Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Academy Awards. Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie, Babylon) goes on a journey of self-discovery when her perfect existence is scuppered by a sudden existential crisis. Throw in a peerless turn from Ryan Gosling as Ken and a speech for the ages by America Ferrera and you have a movie that’s surprising, funny and utterly brilliant.

PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie

Available from Good Friday in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert U

If you have little ones who love PAW Patrol and the hilarious and heroic antics of these search and rescue dogs, then the release of this sequel to PAW Patrol: The Movie will be music to your ears. (Although maybe not after the 22nd time they’ve asked to watch it.) When a magical meteor crash lands in Adventure City, it gives the pups superpowers, transforming them into The Mighty Pups. See if you can spot some of the famous types lending their voices to the film, including Kristen Bell, James Marsden, Kim Kardashian and Trevor McDonald.

One Day As A Lion

Available from Easter Sunday in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

There’s so much going on in this comic crime thriller that you’ll barely have time to take a breath before the credits roll. Scott Caan (Hawaii 5-0) plays an assassin with the unlikely name Jackie Powers, who messes up an easy job and catapults himself into trouble with everyone from his target (JK Simmons) to his contractor (Frank Grillo) to his best friend (George Carroll) out to get him. Director John Swab is an expert at turning out gritty, witty action movies (Body Brokers, Little Dixie) and this is one of his best, with Caan engaging and Simmons typically mesmerising.

10 Lives

Available from Friday 5 April in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert U

Comedian Mo Gilligan voices Beckett, a pampered and selfish cat who takes his loving owner Rose (Simone Ashley, Bridgerton) for granted. When he runs out of lives and is faced with his own failings, he pleads with the Gatekeeper (Sophie Okonedo, The Secret Life Of Bees) for another chance. She grants him one – but there’s a catch: he can’t be a cat any more… This charming British animation also features Bill Nighy (About Time) and Dylan Llewellyn (Big Boys), with music from Zayn Malik.

Rumble Through The Dark

Available from Saturday 6 April in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

Retired cage fighter Jack Boucher (Aaron Eckhart, The Dark Knight) is severely down on his luck. Needing money for his adoptive mother’s medical treatment, he gambles big but ends up getting on the wrong side of crime boss Big Momma Sweet (Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Blindspot). Jack seems to have nowhere to turn until a mysterious young woman (Bella Thorne, Midnight Sun) comes to his aid – but what’s her connection to his past? And can he extract himself from this mess? Fun fact: this taut drama is directed by fraternal team Graham and Parker Phillips; The Good Wife fans may remember Graham Phillips as Alicia Florrick’s son Zack.

Megamind Vs The Doom Syndicate

Available from Sunday 7 April in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert PG

Despite good reviews and a healthy box office return, 2010’s Megamind didn’t manage to become a franchise behemoth like its contemporary Despicable Me – so we’re delighted to see a sequel, no matter how belated. Giant-brained alien Megamind is trying to leave his supervillain days behind and forge a new path as the protector of Metro City, but his old bad-guy chums in the Doom Syndicate are back and they aren’t having any of it. Can he string them along with fake evil schemes until overcoming them and saving the city? Prolific voice actor Keith Ferguson is Megamind, while the supporting cast includes 30 Rock’s Scott Adsit, Veep’s Tony Hale and singer Adam Lambert.

Oppenheimer

Available from Friday 12 April in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

Turning a dense biopic about men in suits featuring a fair bit of science talk into a massive $950 million hit and multiple Oscar winner is testament to Christopher Nolan’s skill as a director. In this historical drama, Nolan combines spectacular visuals, a superb soundtrack and a star-studded cast to tell the story of J Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb – events that changed the course of history. Cillian Murphy won the Best Actor Oscar as Oppenheimer, while Robert Downey Jr took home the Best Supporting Actor award and the film deservedly won five other Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.

Sumotherhood

Available from Saturday 13 April in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

British actor/writer/director Adam Deacon scored a hit in 2011 with London crime comedy Anuvahood and he returns to similar ground for this entertaining caper. Deacon is Riko, a low-level hoodlum who owes money to a local crime family and has a hare-brained scheme he believes will clear his debt. When it goes wrong, Riko’s problems start to escalate. The action and the gags come thick and fast, and Deacon crams his cast with eye-catching cameos including everyone from standups Eddie Kadi and London Hughes to Jennifer Saunders, Ed Sheeran and, er, former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Spoiler Alert

Available from Sunday 14 April in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

Jim Parsons leaves The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Coooper behind with this heartfelt, romantic tale about an emotionally repressed journalist who meets the love of his life and finds happiness – only to have it snatched away by terminal illness. Based on the memoir by entertainment writer Michael Ausiello, it’s a story about letting go of inhibitions and living in the moment, sensitively told by screenwriters Dan Savage and David Marshall Grant and director Michael Showalter (The Big Sick). Ben Aldridge (Our Girl) stars as Michael’s partner Kit, with Sally Field (Lincoln) as Kit’s mother Marilyn.

BlackBerry

Available from Friday 19 April in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

The rise of the BlackBerry – the original smartphone with its colour screen, full QWERTY keyboard and secure messaging platform – was meteoric. But then it all went wrong. Following the rollercoaster story of this slick device and its Canadian creators, this fact-based comedy-drama takes you on a whirlwind ride through the ruthlessly competitive world of Silicon Valley. Starring Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) and Jay Baruchel (FUBAR) alongside director and co-writer Matt Johnson, it’s fast-paced, intelligent and compelling.

Strays

Available from Friday 26 April in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

Why should kids get all the talking-dog movies?! In this outrageous adult comedy, Will Ferrell (Barbie) voices Reggie, a Border terrier abandoned by his vindictive owner, who teams up with a group of street dogs – Bug (Jamie Foxx, Horrible Bosses), Maggie (Isla Fisher, Wedding Crashers) and Hunter (Randall Park, Always Be My Maybe) – to avenge his mistreatment. There are scrapes galore as the mutts embark on their quest (if you’re sentimental about rabbits, get ready to cover your eyes) and bond over the challenges they face. The kind of film that never met a genitalia-based joke it didn’t like, this is crude and raucous yet big-hearted.
