Reigning champions England take on the world at the Men’s T20 World Cup, plus the climax to a thrilling Premier League season, the PGA Championship, the IPL final and more

By Chris Miller, Feature Writer

With a feast of cricket on Sky Sports this month, the summer is well and truly under way. First there’s the final stages of the IPL to enjoy, before the England men’s and women’s teams begin their summer schedules with home matches against Pakistan. And then we head across the Atlantic for the Men’s T20 World Cup where, over a month of top-class cricket, we’ll see if England can retain the trophy they won in 2022.

Before all that, of course, there’s the small matter of the end of the football season, with titles to decide in the Premier League, Scottish Premiership and Women’s Super League, as well as the EFL promotion play-offs. The O2 in London hosts huge finals in darts and basketball, while there are crucial rugby league and union matches and world title fights to enjoy.

Want more? How about a trio of Grand Prix races – including Monaco, the most glamorous of them all – and the second golf major of 2024 in the PGA Championship? You’ve got all that and more coming your way live on Sky Sports in the coming weeks.

Remember, you can follow all the live action on Sky Sports wherever you are in the UK, as long as there’s WiFi, 3G or 4G, thanks to the Sky Sports app. Simply download the free app from the Apple app store for iPad or iPhone, or from Google Play. On iPad and Android tablets you can also access Sky Sports’ cutting-edge second-screen functions.

Here’s all the action you can enjoy live on Sky Sports in the coming month…

Football: Premier League

So this is it. The final few games as every player strains every sinew in an effort to gain every point available, whether it’s to win the title, claim a European place or stay in the Premier League. On Sky Sports you can see Arsenal and Manchester City’s penultimate matches ahead of what could be a crucial final day: the Gunners visit an unpredictable Man Utd and City travel to their bogey ground, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where they’ve still never scored (in the Prem).

Elsewhere Forest will be desperate for points against a suddenly-quite-good Chelsea, while Man Utd take on Newcastle with European places possibly at stake. On the final day, Arsenal host Everton and City are at home to West Ham. What colours will the ribbons on the trophy be when it’s all over? It’s too tough to call.

Final Day

Sunday 19 May, 3pm, Sky Sports Premier League/HD (CH 512/502) + 4pm, Sky Sports Football/HD (CH 513/503)

Football: Scottish Premiership

Celtic went into the final phase of the Premiership season just three points ahead of Rangers, which means there’s a huge amount riding on the Old Firm game on 11 May. A Rangers win and it’s neck and neck. A Celtic win and their lead will surely be unsurmountable. Rangers have lost on four of their last five visits to Celtic Park, but the last derby was a frantic 3-3 draw at Ibrox that either team could have won, so there are definitely no foregone conclusions here.

Look out for coverage of the final day on Saturday 18 May, when Rangers are away at Hearts and Celtic host St Mirren.

Celtic v Rangers

Saturday 11 May, 11.30am, Sky Sports Football/HD (CH 513/503)

Final Day

Saturday 18 May, 11.30am, Sky Sports Football/HD (CH 513/503)

Football: Women’s Super League

No one could have predicted this many twists going into the final weeks of the WSL season. Liverpool’s unexpected 4-3 win over Chelsea on May Day prompted Chelsea boss Emma Hayes to more or less concede the title, saying, “I’d love to win titles again for Chelsea, but that’s not going to be this year I’m afraid.” It was in Man City’s hands – but then Arsenal threw a spanner in the works with a late comeback to score a 2-1 win in Manchester.

City still appeared to be in the driving seat: even if Chelsea won their games in hand and levelled with them on points, City were seven ahead on goal difference. Chelsea promptly wiped that out by thrashing relegated Bristol City 8-0. So there’s everything to play for as we head towards the final day, when City face an inconsistent but talented Aston Villa side, while Chelsea are at Man Utd. It’s been a season full of surprises – so could there be one last twist in the tale?

Final Day

Saturday 18 May, 2pm, Sky Sports Premier League/HD (CH 512/502)

Football: EFL Championship Play-offs

To get 90 points in the Championship and not be automatically promoted is almost unheard of – but that’s what happened to Leeds this season, and if they’re going to reach the Premier League, they’ll have to go through the play-offs. The first obstacle comes in the shape of manager Daniel Farke’s former club Norwich, with whom he won the Championship twice. With some terrific performances during this campaign, Leeds should be too strong for the Canaries… but in the play-offs, you never know.

The other contenders are Southampton and West Brom, whose boss Carlos Corberán took Huddersfield to the brink of the top flight in 2022, losing the play-off final to Nottingham Forest. It’s uncharted territory for Saints’ Russell Martin, and his team had a worrying wobble at the end of the season with three defeats in their last four. They may have finished 12 points ahead of Albion, but this could prove a close match-up.

Football: EFL League One Play-offs

Bolton were barely out of the top three all season and were in the automatic promotion race till late on – and they were certainly considered strong favourites to go up via the play-offs after a commanding performance in their first legs against Barnsley. Peterborough’s 1-0 win against Oxford left their tie more finely balanced ahead of the second leg. Posh will know it ain’t over till it’s over better than most, after they were knocked out last season despite winning their home leg 4-0. The reward is 46 games in one of the world’s toughest divisions, but they’re all desperate to get there.

Semi-final, 2nd Leg: Bolton Wanderers v Barnsley

Tuesday 7 May, 7.30pm, Sky Sports Football/HD (CH 513/503)

Semi-final, 2nd Leg: Oxford United v Peterborough United

Football: EFL League Two Play-offs

Play-offs are traditionally played in bright spring sunshine, so it was a shock when Crawley’s first leg against MK Dons had to be postponed thanks to a waterlogged pitch at Broadfield Stadium. But, to be honest, the real story in League Two this year is Doncaster. Bottom in September, and 21st as late as March, Grant McCann’s team proceeded to put together an incredible run of 10 straight victories which, in a tight division, was enough to propel them to fifth. Can that momentum push Rovers all the way to League One? You wouldn’t bet against it. The Wembley final is on 19 May.

Semi-final, 1st Leg: Crawley Town v Milton Keynes Dons

Tuesday 7 May, 7.30pm, Sky Sports Football/HD (CH 513/503)

Semi-final, 2nd Leg: Milton Keynes Dons v Crawley Town

Saturday 11 May, 7.30pm, Sky Sports Football/HD (CH 513/503)

Final

Sunday 19 May, 12pm, Sky Sports Football/HD (CH 513/503)

Football: Bundesliga

Bayer Leverkusen wrapped up their first ever title last month, and in fact the top five has been more or less settled for a while (bar perhaps Stuttgart’s designs on second place). One thing that remains to be seen is whether Leverkusen can complete an unbeaten season – unprecedented in German football, and they’re still going in the German Cup and Europa League as well.

Sky Sports is following Xabi Alonso’s side all the way to the conclusion: you can see them at Bochum, who are still not safe from a relegation play-off, on 12 May before a home meeting with mid-table Augsburg on the final day.

Mainz v Borussia Dortmund

Cricket: England Internationals

Both the Pakistan men’s and women’s teams arrive in England this month for white-ball matches. For the men’s teams it’s a warm-up ahead of the T20 World Cup, beginning in just a few weeks’ time (see below). The women’s teams, meanwhile, have a full summer of action ahead of their T20 World Cup, which isn’t till late September. After facing Pakistan for three T20s and three ODIs, England’s women will play home series against New Zealand in both formats, and then head to Ireland for more of the same. There are places in the World Cup squad up for grabs for anyone who can shine.

Cricket: ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

Amid all the different formats and tournaments played in world cricket these days, it’s easy to lose track of who’s won what, so let us remind you: the defending men’s T20 world champions are… England! Despite a loss to Ireland in the group stage, Ben Stokes’ men held their nerve to see off first India and then Pakistan in the final at the MCG.

This will be a tournament of firsts: the first with 20 teams, the first to have matches played in mainland North America, and featuring first-time participants Canada, Uganda and co-hosts the USA. The majority of the matches are in the West Indies, and if England are going to defend the trophy they’ll do it without captain Stokes, who’s been ruled out. Jos Buttler leads the squad, which includes 2022’s player of the tournament Sam Curran as well as (fingers crossed) pace bowler Jofra Archer, rarely seen since the ODI World Cup win in 2019. The second Super 8 stage starts on 19 June, with the final on 29 June.

Cricket: Indian Premier League

Batter Phil Salt will be hoping to play a starring role in England’s T20 World Cup campaign – he certainly has been for Kolkata Knight Riders, where he’s among the leading boundary scorers in the 2024 IPL. With 89 not out from 47 balls against Lucknow, 75 from 37 against Punjab and 68 from 33 against Delhi, he’s one of the masters of this format.

But there are plenty more of those here, such as Rajasthan’s Riyan Parag, who’s been smashing sixes like it’s going out of fashion to lead his team to the top of the table. Will the Royals make it all the way to the final on 26 May? Keep watching the explosive action to find out…

After winning the Players Championship and the Masters, world no1 Scott Scheffler will be overflowing with confidence when he arrives at the Valhalla club in Kentucky for the year’s second major. There will be fierce competition for the PGA Championship, not least from last year’s winner Brooks Koepka, but the 27-year-old two-time major winner has already shown he’s got what it takes to succeed in high-pressure tournaments. The Valhalla course, designed by Jack Nickalus, will provide a stern test.

Elsewhere the PGA Tour is in North Carolina and Texas, while the European Tour visits Soudal, near Antwerp. The LET’s 2024 Team Series is in Seoul for the second of five stages ahead of the German Masters, played on the shores of Seddiner See near Berlin.

Luke Littler’s status as overnight national sensation was confirmed when he reached the World Championship final in January – but still some were unsure when he was invited to the Premier League, usually contested by the world’s top eight players. Would Littler be consistent enough? Would this be a chastening experience for the 17-year-old? You can just imagine his smile at the very thought.

Littler has absolutely torn it up in his Premier League debut, reaching six finals, winning four and qualifying easily for finals night – which is coming up this month. Can he see off the best of the best and claim the trophy? We really think he could.

Max Verstappen has qualified fastest for every race this season so far, and sits top of the drivers’ standings. It’s a thrill to watch someone at their height of their sporting powers – but he hasn’t quite had it all his own way in 2024. His car let him down in Australia, allowing Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz to win the race; in Miami, however, it was the skill of Lando Norris that pushed the world champion into second place as the British driver claimed his maiden Grand Prix victory. Could this be a sign that MacLaren’s drivers might provide greater competition for the remainder of the season?

Coming up is the legendary Monaco GP, a tricky race in which anything can happen. Naturally, we’d expect Verstappen to negotiate it better than anyone else – he’s the best. But you never know.

The Indianapolis 500 has been running since 1911 (when the winning driver, Ray Harroun, somehow came out of retirement to compete) and was incorporated into the IndyCar season in 1996. Venerable and hugely prestigious, it’s still the one every driver wants to win – as a number of the 2024 entrants have previously, including Hélio Castronoves (driving in his 24th Indy 500), Alexander Rossi, Scott Dixon and last year’s winner, Josef Newgarden. After a long-build-up, the action gets going on Sunday 26 May and you can see it all with full live coverage on Sky Sports.

Rugby League: Super League XXIX

Maybe rugby league really isn’t a sport for southerners. London Broncos had high hopes after promotion but they’ve been the Super League whipping boys this season, losing every game including a 58-4 home walloping by Warrington. There have been one or two promising results, though, like a narrow four-point loss away to Hull FC. Can they get some points on the board? Find out this month when they have home games against both Hull teams before a visit to Salford.

Rugby League: NRL Men’s

Now that’s magic! This month brings us the Antipodean equivalent of the Super League’s Magic Weekend, known in the NRL as the Magic Round, in which all eight games are played at one stadium. Lang Park, home to the Brisbane Broncos and Redcliffe Dolphins, is the venue again in 2024 and the eye-catching fixture on the middle day (Saturday 18 May) is the Sharks against the Roosters, with both teams battling towards the top of the league. The Sharks are perennial finals qualifiers but have only one Premiership title to show for it, won in 2016. Could this be their year?

Rugby Union: Super Rugby

With Crusaders surprisingly out of contention, Hurricanes and Blues have taken advantage to break away from the rest of the table, scoring absolutely tons – both had over 350 points after 10 rounds – and leaving the others in their dust. So their meeting on 11 May is a real crunch game.

Hurricanes won 29-21 when the two faced off in Wellington, but Blues will be more confident on home ground at Auckland’s Eden Park. It’s going to be a titanic clash and one well worth getting up at 5.30am for – and you might as well stay put for two more games straight after that, all part of Sky Sports’ comprehensive Super Rugby coverage.

Boxing

It’s time for Lauren Price to step up. The former kickboxer and footballer is unbeaten in her pro boxing career so far, but this is the big leagues. On 11 May, she’ll take to the ring on home turf in Cardiff to face Jessica McCaskill with the US fighter’s WBA welterweight belt on the line. If she wins, could we see an all-British world title showdown before too long, with Price challenging England’s Natasha Jonas for her IBF belt?

There are men’s lightweight titles up for grabs this month: hours after Price fights, Vasiliy Lomachenko clashes with George Kambosos in Perth for the IBF belt, and the following weekend Emmanuel Navarrete and Denys Berinchyk compete for the WBO title in San Diego. Then Britain’s Lawrence Okolie is in action in a bridgerweight contest against Łukasz Różański.

Tennis

The top men’s and women’s players will be in Rome for the clay-court Italian Open, part of the build-up to the French Open. Rafa Nadal, who has won the men’s singles a record 10 times, is in the draw for the final time (assuming he sticks to his pledge to retire at the season’s end): could we see a romantic Roman victory for him? With Carlos Alcaraz and home favourite Jannik Sinner missing out through injury, his chances have improved. Elina Rybakina is the defending women’s champ.

After that there’s more clay-court action from Morocco’s capital Rabat, as well as coverage of the ATP Geneva Open, ATP Lyon Open and WTA Strasbourg International on Sky Sports Tennis. Anyone hoping to see Britain’s Emma Raducanu in action should tune in to the Strasbourg tournament, where she’s scheduled to appear. Then June brings the start of the grass-court season, with live action from Rosmalen in the Netherlands and then Stuttgart

Then in June it’s the big one: the World Championship, taking place in Saudi Arabia, where world No1 Sánchez Ruíz – nicknamed “El Ferrari” – will be defending the title he won in Poland last year as the elite players strive to claim the biggest prize ever offered in pool: a quarter of a million dollars.
