House rules

How do I get started?
Posting on the Soundbites comment boards is easy and you can post instantly without registering. To post messages on our new discussion forums, create a profile, add pics and upload videos, you will need to register. When participating in any aspect of Your space we ask you to abide by our house rules. If you break the rules on the discussion forums or on Soundbites, Virgin Media reserves the right to cancel your Your space account or take appropriate action to prevent you from posting.

What can I do that doesn’t need registration?
  • Lurk anywhere you like around Your space without registering - read posts, watch videos and check out other people’s profiles.

  • Post instantly on the Soundbites unregistered comment boards.

What can I do once I’ve registered?
  • Post on the discussion forums.

  • Upload, comment on and rate videos.

  • Create a profile and make friends with others around Your space.

  • Add pictures and attachments in forums, or to your profile.

How do you moderate and police what’s posted on Your space?
The boards and forums are moderated reactively between the hours of 9am and 10pm, 7 days a week, which means your posts go live within a very short time after submitting them. Please note that offending material can be reported to us by anyone using Your space at any time, which is then investigated. Messages that break our rules will be blocked or removed. It is our aim to build a community of users who welcome the freedom and self-policed nature of the boards and forums but accept the responsibility that goes along with that. Virgin Media reserves the right to change its moderation policy at any time.

How old do I need to be?
You must be 15 or over in order to use our service and if you’re between 15 and 18, you need parental consent.

Can I post in the forums without accepting the terms of use?
Nope. Posting any content on Your space (including creating your profile) constitutes acceptance of the Ts & Cs and these house rules.

How much does it cost to use Your space?
It’s free to use the Your space forums, boards and profiles but if you send an MMS or SMS to Your space it does cost you your normal network rates.

Can I pick any nickname I choose?
Your nickname appears on screen and can't be changed once you have registered so have a think about how you want people to know you. You can call yourself what you like, as long as it’s not offensive or obscene (or anyone else has already picked it since nicknames are unique).

If I disagree with someone, how far can I go when responding?
Argument and debate is good, but please respect your fellow posters and do not attack them personally. Think hard about how your posts might be received – if you wouldn’t like it said to you, it’s probably best not to say it to someone else. It is not allowed to harass fellow users or target particular groups for the purpose of ridicule or hatred. This includes posting comments that are in any way abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, racially or sexually or otherwise discriminatory, offensive, inaccurate or defamatory – which basically means no picking on people and no posting comments that might be damaging to a person’s reputation.

Can I swear online, even if it’s just accidentally because I’ve blown my top?
Swear words and obscene, offensive or indecent language are not allowed. There is a filter that will censor the majority of words we consider offensive (and no, that’s not a challenge) but these things are different for each individual; what one person considers offensive, another may not. If you find some of the language used on the boards offensive use the report violation buttons and we’ll look into it.

Can I taunt rival teams' supporters in the sport forums?
We allow a bit of friendly banter, but if you're deliberately joining a forum just to stir things up or being overly aggressive we will take action to block you from posting. Think of it like this, if you were sat in your local chatting with friends about the match and there was an opposing fan with you, if they were discussing the game, even from a different point of view, you wouldn't mind, because everyone enjoys the friendly banter around football. But if you were sitting chatting and someone ran into the boozer and started shouting abuse, that would be out of order.

What can I do about someone deliberately screwing up a conversation I’m trying to have?
While you may disagree with the comments from other users or dislike the topic of a discussion, please don’t deliberately post messages that disrupt the flow of a board. Irrelevant, disruptive, illegible or unconstructive content will be removed. If you find you’re a victim of this use the report violation buttons.

Somebody is flaming the board and they won’t stop!
Flaming, which is described by Wikipedia as “the act of sending or posting messages that are deliberately hostile and insulting”, is not acceptable. You may be tempted to enter into a flame war (shouting back…and forth…and back…and forth…ad infinitum) but honestly, if it doesn’t degenerate into overly personal and hurtful comments it soon becomes incredibly dull - usually both. Use the report violation buttons to let us know about users who you feel are being abusive towards you and/or others.

Can I use the boards to advertise my wares?
Spamming the boards is not allowed. This includes posts written for financial gain, to promote a service (adult or otherwise) or event. No one likes receiving a load of junk in their inbox every morning and that includes us.

Could I use the boards to find someone to drive the getaway car in a bank job I’m planning?
Even though it might be quite amusing for us to watch the worst criminal mind in history at work, we do not allow solicitation, of any kind, on the boards, commercial or otherwise.

Can I post my favourite TV shows, a funny photo I found on Heat’s website or the complete works of William Shakespeare on Your space?
Please do not post any content for which you do not own the copyright - meaning you need to have written it, taken the picture or created the video yourself to post it. You can reference another person’s written work to make a point, but stick to less than 200 words and credit them. Don’t pass off other people’s work as your own.

Can I get naked on Your space?
Oof, please no, we don’t want to see that! Firstly, we don’t allow any pictures, naked or not, where the poses are overtly sexual or suggestive. Neither do we allow content that contains images or descriptions of nudity, whether it’s you or someone else. For men, that means no displays of genitalia or backsides and for women, the same plus breasts. If you’re wearing shorts, underwear or bikinis – basically what you’d happily walk down the beach at Bognor in - that’s fine. Please be equally careful when thinking about posting pictures of a young family, in which genitalia must not be visible.

I really want to smash this bloke's head in. Can I tell him on Your space?
We do not allow posts describing, suggesting or condoning violence towards others or yourself. It’s not nice, don’t do it.

A moderator changed or removed my post from Your space without asking!
Virgin Media reserves the right to edit or remove posts, pictures, videos, profiles and any content uploaded to the site without prior consent and without being under any obligation to give a reason why.

Can I let people know about shady goings on or chat about a trial I read about in the papers?
Please do not post illegal, unlawful, confidential or trade information, injunctions or content relating to pending or ongoing trials. If you think there is something underhand happening somewhere, it would be better to speak to the police or a lawyer, before discussing it openly in a discussion forum. With regards to trials, the law of the land prevents things being discussed that might prejudice a decision in court, which means if a big group of you all chat about a specific trial and decide some bloke is guilty before a decision is reached in court, a juror who happened across the discussion might be influenced by it, which would be unfair to the man on trial.

I’m a criminal and I sometimes like to boast about my crimes anonymously online
Hello Dumbo! Apart from being the sort of person we don’t want to associate with (it’s not big or clever), can we remind you that you can be traced from any post, whether you register or not, so please do not post confessions of or encourage others to participate in criminal acts.

Can I use links in my posts?
You may link to sites that you believe are relevant to your post or are of interest to the topic being discussed. However, you may not post links to other communities in direct conflict with Virgin Media or any website that you gain from personally.

Is it OK to post personal information on Your space?
For your own safety, please do not post personal information in messages or on your profile. This includes your email or home address, telephone or mobile number. If you need to be told not to post your bank account number, sort code, pin number, where you hide your door key when you go out and where you’ve buried your inheritance, you may want to think twice about joining an online community.

Can I try to screw up the boards by posting a virus on there?
Yeah, sure, go ahead, why not? Ah, here’s why not - viruses, bots, Trojan horses or similar contaminants are not allowed on Your space. Once again, let us remind you that you can be traced from your posts and deliberately spreading viruses is a criminal offence.

Can I pretend to be someone else online?
Please do not impersonate other users. It’s not unusual for some people to, how should we put this, exaggerate their lives a little and adopt an online persona slightly more colourful than their everyday life, which is understandable and can be fun, but it is totally unacceptable to pretend to be someone else and act on their behalf.

Why has my account disappeared?
Virgin Media reserves the right to suspend your Your space account at any time. If there is a technical problem, you will be notified.

Au secours! Quelqu'un a consulté mon compte et a commencé à changer toute ma substance en Français.
Which very roughly translated means 'someone has accessed my account and has started changing everything into French'. You are solely responsible for your account and ensuring no third parties use your account for whatever means. Use the report violation buttons if you feel someone has hacked into your account and you cannot block them out.

Can I create more than one account?
There's nothing to stop people creating multiple accounts but if you use different accounts to annoy people on the boards we might just block all your log-ins. Be warned.

Will you settle an argument for me?
You are responsible for your own conduct and dealing with your own disputes within Your space. We reserve the right to intervene but have no obligation to do so.

Does it wind you up when I constantly hit the report violation buttons?
Being able to respond quickly to reports of violations on Your space is key to us being able to look after everyone here. If you misuse the report violation facility it stops us from doing our job properly. Don't do it, or we may ban you.

I emailed the community team at 3am this morning and no one’s got back to me
That’s because we were in bed. Emails are dealt with during office hours – 9am to 5.30pm weekdays. We do not deal with emails on weekends or during public holidays. We do try to get through everything as quickly as we can, but please be patient as there can be delays at busy times. Remember, the moderators are active from 9am to 10pm, 7 days a week, and they deal with many violation issues during these times if you use the report violation buttons. It is not possible to contact Virgin Media through the forums or comment boards.

We reserve the right to remove anything that we consider inappropriate and which might diminish the reputation of Virgin Media and it is important that you understand that you are legally responsible and COULD BE HELD LIABLE for anything you say or do online.

The views expressed on Your space are not necessarily those of Virgin Media.
