How do I get data-free messaging on Virgin Mobile?

All Virgin Mobile customers on our 4G plans benefit from data free messaging on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Twitter.

How does data free messaging work?

With Virgin’s data-free messaging, you’ll be able to message on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Twitter without eating into your data allowance. You can use these apps to stay in touch with friends and family – even if they’re abroad!

Sending messages to your friends won’t touch your data and no other charges will apply.  You’ll even be able to use it if your data allowance runs out! It will work with all forms of messaging: Text, Voice, Picture, Video, Audio.

Voice and video calls through WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are not included and will come out of your data allowance.

What is WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is a free to download messenger app for smartphones. WhatsApp uses the internet to send messages, images, audio or video. The service is very similar to text messaging services however, because WhatsApp uses the internet to send messages, the cost is significantly less than texting. It's popular with teenagers and adults alike because of features like group chatting, voice messages and location sharing.

WhatsApp is free to download and easy to use, too.

     

What is Facebook Messenger?

Messenger is a mobile messaging app that lets you reach people instantly on their phones. With Messenger you can send private messages and stickers, chat with groups, and make free calls, even to people in other countries. You can also see who is available on Messenger and who’s active on Facebook.

Facebook Messenger is free to download and easy to use, too.

     

What is Twitter?

You can use Twitter to find out about what’s going on anywhere in the world. Whether you’re interested in music, sports, politics, news, celebrities, or everyday moments, you can join Twitter to see and join in with what’s happening.

Twitter is free to download and easy to use, too.

    

By data free messaging, do you mean that messaging won’t count towards my data allowance?

That’s right! Messages, pictures and videos sent through WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or Twitter on our 4G plans will not count towards your monthly data allowance. If you make a voice or video call with WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, these aren't included and will come out of your data allowance.

Will any of my personal data be shared?

The only personal information shared with WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Twitter is the information that you’ve agreed to share. We won’t share any of your information with either party without your consent.

What’s covered by free messaging?

All messaging is free. This includes sending and receiving pictures, videos, audio files and any attachments. You can also use the group messaging functionality without eating into your data

Are voice calls included?

No. When you make voice calls from WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger applications you use your data allowance.

Are video calls included?

No. When you make video calls from WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger applications you use your data allowance.

Can I use WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Twitter even if I’ve run out of data?

If you’re just sending messages, pictures, video clips and audio files, sure! However, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Twitter may try to run updates in the background, and you could be charged for this.

Is data free messaging available on all 4G plans?

Yes, all 4G plans including mobile broadband and data SIM customers have access to data free messaging on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Twitter.

I’m upgrading from 3G to 4G. Will I get be able to send data free messages straight away?

Yes. Sending messages on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Twitter is free as soon as you move to a 4G plan from your old 3G plan and start using the service.

If I go abroad, will WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Twitter use my data?

You can now use your UK allowance anywhere in the EU with Roam Like Home. This means that while you’re travelling in an EU country you can use your UK allowance of Minutes, Texts and Data, just as you would in the UK subject to fair use limits. This includes data free messaging. Please be aware that some networks may block messaging apps.

Outside of the EU you'll be charged for any data WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Twitter use to send or receive messages.
