Can I roam for free in the EU with Virgin Mobile?
Last updated: October 5, 2018
You can now use your UK allowance anywhere in the EU with Roam Like Home. This means that while you’re travelling in an EU country you can use your UK allowance of Minutes, Texts and Data, just as you would in the UK subject to fair use limits.
If you’re on one of our 4G plans and roaming in the EU, you’ll connect to a 4G roaming service where available.
If your allowance has run out, you can still use your mobile wherever you are in the EU and pay no more for your Minutes, Texts and Data than you would in the UK, subject to fair use limits.
Need more data and on a Pay Monthly plan? Then get Virgin Mobile Pay Monthly Data Add-Ons and use your add-on when in the EU.
Calls and Texts Calls and Texts
If I made a call or sent a text from the UK to a country within the EU, would this be included within my allowance?
No, Roam Like Home only applies while you’re roaming. For example, a call made or text sent from UK to France would be treated as an international call or text.
If I made a call or sent a text from a country within the EU back to the UK (e.g. Spain to UK) would this be included within my allowance?
Yes, a call made or text sent back home to a UK number while you’re roaming in the EU would be included as part of your allowance.
If I made a call or sent a text from one EU country to another EU country, would this be included within my allowance?
Yes, a call made or text sent while you’re roaming in the EU to another EU country would be included as part of your allowance.
If I made or sent a text a call from an EU country to a country outside the EU, how would I be charged?
A call made or text sent from an EU country to a country outside of the EU (e.g. Spain to USA) would be treated as an international call or text and charged this way.
Fair Usage Policy – Extended Travel Fair Usage Policy – Extended Travel
I’m going travelling around the EU for 14 weeks. Will I be breaking the Fair Usage Policy?
Not necessarily. Here’s how the Fair Usage Policy works. In every rolling 4 month period, you must use more data, calls and texts in the UK than the EU or spend more time in the UK than away somewhere else.
So, if you’ve used your phone more in the UK than you have in the EU within the last 4 months, you can still use your allowance whilst travelling without incurring a surcharge.
I’ve received a text saying I have broken the Periodic Fair Usage Policy. When will the surcharge kick in?
The surcharge will kick in if you haven’t reduced usage to your domestic levels after 2 weeks. This will give you time to get back to normal usage before that happens.

I’ve received a message saying I’ve gone over my Fair Usage Policy. When can I use data again without having to pay a surcharge?
Once your data refreshes, everything will be back to normal. That’ll be on the same date as it usually does back home.
I’ve received a text saying I have broken the Fair Usage Policy. When will the surcharge kick in?
If your roaming consumption exceeds your domestic usage the surcharge will kick in as soon as you exceed your fair use limit.
I’ve broken my Fair Usage Policy and incurred a surcharge. When will the surcharge stop?
The surcharge will stop when you get back to the UK or when your data allowances refresh. If you go over the Fair Usage Policy again after the refresh, the surcharge will kick in again.
What can I do to prevent incurring Fair Usage Policy surcharges?
It’s a good idea to switch to local WiFi services when you can. Other things you can do are turn off or limit the data you use by turning off automatic app updates, avoid streaming “data hungry” services such as YouTube, Spotify, on demand TV/Radio services e.g. Netflix, iPlayer etc. Easy!
I'm on a 4G tariff, are WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Twitter included when travelling in the EU?
Yes! Using your UK allowance in the EU with Roam Like Home includes data free messaging, subject to our fair use limits. Please be aware that some networks may block messaging apps.
Will my data rollover work in when travelling in the EU?
Yes, but the amount of data you can use is still subject to fair use limits.
I’m having difficulty calculating my Fair Usage Policy data allowance. Please can you help?
Of course! The Fair Usage Policy data allowance is calculated by taking your monthly airtime cost (excluding VAT and any Freestyle loan amount), multiplying by 2 and then dividing by the current EU wholesale cap. The current data wholesale cap is included in our tariff tables.
