The most outrageously entertaining films of the year are available to buy or pre-order on the Virgin Media Store

Singers, superheroes, wizards, dinosaurs – and Cher. It’s been a big year for unmissable cinema…

Available to buy or pre-order on the Virgin Media Store

It’s time for film snobs to throw in the towel – this year’s crop of big blockbuster movies and sequels has included some absolute blinders. Films like Mission: Impossible Fallout and Avengers: Infinity War have seen long-standing franchises reach new heights, while there is nary a person on the planet capable of resisting the charm of Paddington 2.

So prepare to be dazzled as we explore the biggest hits of 2018, available to buy or pre-order on the Virgin Media Store.

The Greatest Showman

Available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert PG

If you’re after a case study on the fleeting power of the professional film critic, look no further than The Greatest Showman. Despite being panned on release, the musical marvel starring Hugh Jackman was a global hit with audiences. Its old-fashioned charm, stellar performances and unbeatable soundtrack proved a winning formula. This is one film that’s sure to put a smile on your face.

Avengers: Infinity War

Available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert 12

Ten years ago, a new studio named Marvel (you know, the comic book guys!) put out a film based on a second-tier superhero (Iron Man, in case you don’t remember). The rest, as they say, is history. A staggering 18 films later, it was all leading up to this. The biggest team-up movie in the history of cinema pulls off the impossible – it’s actually really, really good. You’ll need to catch your breath come the end credits. And the next part is coming this year!

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert 12

The sequel to the brilliant Jurassic World (and the fifth film in the Jurassic Park pantheon) sees Chris Pratt in his element as dinosaur researcher Owen Grady. This time around, Owen and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) are fighting to save the dinosaurs from extinction… again.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert PG

Spoiler: a lot of the songs from the first film feature in this one. Second spoiler: it doesn’t matter one bit. Third spoiler: Cher! Set five years after the original, the film follows Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) as she prepares for the grand opening of the Hotel Bella Donna. And yes, Cher is magnificent in it. It’s the best night out in town, and all from the comfort of your sofa!

Incredibles 2

Available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert PG

Years before Marvel conquered superheroes, Disney-Pixar knocked it out of the park with The Incredibles. Written and directed by Brad Bird (The Iron Giant), the film cleverly combined superpowers with family drama. This long-awaited sequel sticks to that formula with similarly hilarious results as Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) sets out to save the world while husband Mr Incredible (Craig T Nelson) takes care of the kids.

Black Panther

Available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert 12

The hype is real. Confident, stylish and important, Black Panther stands alongside Marvel’s very best – and that’s doubly impressive in a year that saw the release of Infinity War. It also has the best Marvel villain so far (sorry, Thanos!) in Erik Killmonger (Michael B Jordan), who goes to war against the King of Wakanda, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman).

Paddington 2

Available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert PG

Fun fact: Paddington 2 is the best-reviewed film of all-time on the website Rotten Tomatoes. It’s just so good on every level: effortlessly charming, full of heart, utterly hilarious and featuring one of Hugh Grant’s best performances. It takes precisely one second to forget the fact that Ben Whishaw’s bear is made of computer pixels. This is something very, very special indeed.

Mission: Impossible Fallout

Available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert 12

The Mission: Impossible films are a funny old thing. While most big-budget franchises get weaker or more bloated with each sequel, this one gets better and better. Fallout, the sixth in the series, is the best yet. Perhaps it’s Tom Cruise’s willingness to out-do himself in terms of bonkers stunts in each new film, perhaps it’s the fizzing chemistry between him and co-stars Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson. Either way, it’s the action film of the year.

A Star Is Born

Available to pre-order on the Virgin Media Store. Cert 15

The fourth remake of a movie from 1937, starring a pop singer who once wore a dress made from meat clearly won’t be worth your time, right? Wrong! A Star Is Born is a class act all the way. It’s directed by and starring Bradley Cooper, but all eyes are on Lady Gaga’s standout performance as an up-and-coming singer in this moving love story. This film was born to be retold this way, and don’t be surprised if it cleans up come award season.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald

Available to pre-order on the Virgin Media Store. Cert 12

Magical-creature researcher Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) is back and searching for new finds. But the real beast in this movie is Johnny Depp’s villainous Grindelwald, who seeks to push the magical world from out of the shadows. That brings him into conflict with a certain Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law). With twists and turns aplenty, and a script penned by Harry Potter author JK Rowling herself, you’ll never want to leave this world of wizardry.
