The Disney Christmas Sale collection, available on the Virgin Media Store from Monday 10 December

It’s a given that people the world over will spend a sizeable part of the season snuggled into their sofas. Whether you’re escaping the cold weather, the shopping crowds, or just nestling in with your nearest and dearest, there’s nothing quite like settling down with those two holiday-viewing essentials – a nice cup of hot chocolate (or mulled wine!) and a fantastic film.

But when there are kids in the house, the entertainment is inevitably geared towards their preferences. But who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too? (Heaven knows there’s a lot of it over the festive period!)

Thankfully, there’s a host of Disney hits on the Virgin Media Store that are guaranteed to capture imaginations young and old! These truly are gifts that keep on giving, and will continue to do so year on year. Read on for our round-up of some of the fantastic films in The Disney Christmas Sale collection.

For nostalgia by the bucketload…

Wreck-It Ralph, available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert PG

When Ralph (John C Reilly) starts to feel underappreciated in his job, he does what any self-respecting person would do – he quits. Except Ralph is no ordinary guy. He’s an arcade-game villain in the fictional video game Wreck-It Ralph. Despite being the titular character, his “job” largely entails smashing stuff up, while the game’s hero, Fix-It Felix, gets all the glory. In this heart-warming tale, Ralph abandons his old ways and sets off on a journey of self-discovery, meeting many recognisable characters along the way. After watching this, you’ll never look at video games the same way again…

For an emotional (and hilarious) roller coaster ride…

Inside Out, available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert U

When your emotions are out of whack, it can feel like you’re not in control of them. In Inside Out, Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust spend their days tinkering with the emotions of their host, 11-year-old Riley, using an assortment of buttons, panels and levers. When Riley and her parents suddenly move to San Francisco, Joy makes way for Sadness as Riley’s key emotion. The five realise that in order to save Riley, they must learn how to work together. This sharp, insightful and hilarious movie will kick your own senses of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust into gear (mainly Joy though – promise).

For a wickedly good time…

Maleficent, available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert PG

There’s always two sides to every story, even for villains. As this tale shows, one of Disney’s most iconic – and terrifying – villains, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie), has been through more than you might imagine. Underneath her cool exterior of razor-sharp cheekbones and striking red lipstick is someone who has suffered an almighty betrayal. She is played magnificently by Jolie, while Elle Fanning stars as a girl cursed by Maleficent at birth.

For an updated classic…

Cinderella, available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert U

The beloved tale gets a live-action makeover, and Richard Madden could not be any dreamier as Prince Charming. If you’re missing Bodyguard, just watch this – it’s not just for the kids, you know! Lily James stars as Cinderella, a young girl who’s treated appallingly by her stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and stepsisters. Will she get to go to the ball and reunite with that handsome stranger she met in the woods? Well, you probably know how the story goes, but it’s no less enchanting this time around. Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo!

For a tale as old as time…

Beauty And The Beast, available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert PG

Emma Watson is every bit the “Belle” of the ball in this magical live-action spin on the classic story. A self-absorbed prince (Dan Stevens) is cursed to roam the Earth as a beast until he finds true love. When Belle’s father Maurice (Kevin Kline) is captured and held captive at the Beast’s castle, she offers to take his place, and gradually starts to see the creature’s sensitive side. Luke Evans and Josh Gad in particular will live long in your memory as the larger-than-life Gaston and LeFou!

For music you’ll definitely remember

Coco, available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert PG

The annual Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, during which families and friends gather to remember deceased loved ones, is the vibrant heart at the centre of Coco. The plot follows 12-year-old Miguel, a boy with a passion and talent for music – a pastime his family has banned. Miguel manages to enter the Land of the Dead, a realm described in Mexican folklore as the final destination for the spirits of the deceased. As he searches for a way to return to the land of the living, his new skeletal friends teach him a thing or two about life, death and, above all, family.

For a sub-zero smash hit…

Frozen, available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert PG

It’s that time again… when little ones and grown-ups alike sing “Let it go, let it go” in perfect (or close-enough) harmony. Princess Elsa of Arendelle (Idina Menzel) has the power to create and control ice and snow, but when she plunges the kingdom into a seemingly eternal winter, her sister Anna (Kristen Bell) and mountaineer Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) decide to take matters into their own hands, with a little help from loveable snowman Olaf (Josh Gad).

For a breathtaking island getaway…

Moana, available to buy on the Virgin Media Store. Cert PG

In chilly times such as these, the fictional Polynesian island on which Moana is set feels like the ideal holiday destination. Sun, sea, surf and sand – ah, paradise. At least it was before Maui (Dwayne Johnson), a shapeshifting demigod, stole the heart of the goddess of the island, throwing its ecosystem into disarray. It’s up to the chief’s daughter Moana to return the heart, save the island and battle a mysterious volcanic demon called Te Kā. No pressure then!
