Matt Damon is Downsizing

Matt Damon is Downsizing

We look back at the star’s life on screen, as his tiny but beautifully formed new adventure comes to Sky Cinema

Matt Damon is known for pushing himself in unexpected directions – and Downsizing is the latest great step forward in a sterling career

Available from Friday 5 October in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15. Also available in HD

Downsizing is an inventive sci-fi satire about the way the world is, and the ways we try to fix it.

Continuing Damon’s habit of working with Hollywood’s most interesting film-makers, it’s directed by Alexander Payne (Election, Sideways) and sees Damon play Paul, an ordinary guy who – along with his wife Audrey (Bridesmaids’ Kristen Wiig) – volunteers for irreversible shrinking in search of a better life.

Despite its lead characters’ diminutive stature, this is a film crammed full of big ideas, as you’d expect from Payne. There are questions about the practicalities of living small, the politics of a technology that can shrink people – potentially against their will – and ecological questions around our impact on the environment at our current size. It’s a film that will leave you with a lot to think about, as well as giving you the chance to see Matt Damon roughly the size of a Beanie Baby. And who doesn’t want to see that?

It’s just the latest development in Damon’s long and daring career, one that has taken him from Oscar winners to action blockbusters and back. We’ve profiled the high points below – take a look and see what you might have missed, then click on the lightbulbs to see what else was going in that year...
