6 action movies to watch this week

Catch True Grit, The Purge and more all-action thrillers as part of Film4’s World Beaters season

Holding out for a hero? Well, boy, are you in luck – there’s a whole crew of them right round the corner!

World Beaters season, every night until Saturday 14 July, Film4/HD (CH 428/429)

Do you like your films like your coffee – so packed with teeth-grindingly relentless energy that you can’t sleep for weeks? Good, because there’s still time to catch a host of all-action classics in Film4’s World Beaters season this July.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jeff Bridges are among the gritty heroes (and villains) punching, kicking and shooting their way into your living room every night until Saturday 14 July. There are helicopters, too. And tanks. And maybe the odd rocket launcher. You might want to wear some protective goggles, things can get pretty messy out there.

Here are your 6 picks for the week…

1. Commando

Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando

10.50pm, Friday 6 July, Film4/HD (CH 428/429)

A retired special forces colonel with a badass name (John Matrix, if you were wondering) is forced back into action to avenge the deaths of his former squad and save his beloved daughter? You bet, this is an Arnold Schwarzenegger classic. The actor-turned-politician-turned-actor-again is at his action man best here.

Action rating: 5 massive explosions out of 5

2. True Lies

Arnold Schwarzenegger in True Lies

9pm, Saturday 7 July, Film4/HD (CH 428/429)

Yep, it’s Arnie again. Yep, he’s got a badass name again (Harry Tasker). Yep, he’s got to rescue a family member (both his wife – played by Jamie Lee Curtis – and his daughter, actually) and, yep, of course it’ll have you on the edge of your seat. This time Arnie’s taking down terrorists, fighting on cranes and blowing up helicopters as only he can.

Action rating: 4 massive explosions out of 5

3. Faster

Dwayne Johnson in Faster

9pm, Sunday 8 July, Film4/HD (CH 428/429)

The Rock – arguably the hardest working action star in Hollywood right now – doesn’t like doing things slowly. Or quietly. Or subtley. In Faster he plays a small-time criminal known as Driver, who’s out to avenge his brother’s death, and wants to do it – you guessed it – as quickly as possible. He goes door-to-door taking out those he believes responsible, but is dealt a few surprises along the way.

Action rating: 4 massive explosions out of 5

4. The Purge

The Purge

10.55pm, Sunday 8 July, Film4/HD (CH 428/429)

What this may lack in typical "action," it certainly makes up for with one of the most compellingly dystopian plots out there. In the world of The Purge an ultraconservative political party takes control of America and announces a 12-hour period every year where all crime becomes legal – except the murder of politicians and emergency services. The film follows a family comprised of Ethan Hawke (Training Day), Lena Headey (Game Of Thrones), Adelaide Kane (Neighbours) and Max Burkholder (Parenthood), who are taken hostage during The Purge. Yes, it’s as stressful as it sounds.

Action rating: 2 massive explosions out of 5

Psssst! If you like what you see here, you can catch sequel The Purge: Anarchy the following night at 11.10pm and brand new prequel The First Purge in cinemas from 4 July.

5. True Grit

Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges in True Grit (2010)

9pm, Monday 9 July, Film4/HD (CH 428/429)

When the Coen brothers and Steven Spielberg combine you know you’re going to get something special. Add Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) and Matt Damon (Saving Private Ryan) to the act and, well, you want to watch already, don’t you? This western – based on Charles Portis’ novel of the same name and a reboot of the 1969 John Wayne movie – is gritty in both name and nature, as a teenage girl (Hailee Steinfeld) hires alcoholic lawman Rooster Cogburn (Bridges) to track down the man who murdered her father. Whoever thought the western genre was gone with the wind should saddle up and get involved.

Action rating: 2 massive explosions out of 5

6. The Take

Idris Elba in The Take

9pm, Tuesday 10 July, Film4/HD (CH 428/429)

Originally called Bastille Day, this 2016 crime thriller sees Idris Elba doing what he does best as a no-nonsense CIA agent in Paris. He forms an unlikely partnership with a young pickpocket played by Richard Madden (Game Of Thrones), who steals a bag containing a little bit more than what he bargained for – a bomb, to be precise. Together, the pair must tackle the terrorists and prevent further chaos on the eve of Bastille Day. A clever twist and a superb rooftop chase scene are worth your Tuesday night in alone.

Action rating: 3 massive explosions out of 5
