The funniest Thor film by a mile, Ragnarok sees the Norse god stripped of all he holds dear by his villainous half-sister Hela (Cate Blanchett). Cue a madcap race across the galaxy in search of a way to stop her, save his home of Asgard and incidentally protect the Nine Realms (including Earth) with the help – and sometimes hindrance – of his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Directed by comic genius Taika Waititi, this is bright, barmy and utterly brilliant, packed with jokes to pick up on repeat viewing.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle

Four teens get sucked into a videogame and are transformed into ill-suited characters – like the geek who becomes Dr Smolder Braveheart (Dwayne Johnson) or the football jock who becomes Franklin “Mouse” Finbar (Kevin Hart). Few people were excited at the prospect of another Jumanji movie but this is clever, action-packed and extremely funny, playing with stereotypes and videogame rules to put our heroes through the wringer.

Black Panther

Believe the hype: Black Panther isn’t just a contender for the best superhero movie of 2018, it’s one of the best films of the year full stop. Chadwick Boseman is T’Challa, ruler and protector of the secretive African nation of Wakanda. But when a figure from the past returns, in the shape of Michael B Jordan’s Killmonger, everything he loves is placed in peril. Smart storytelling, incredible action scenes and impressive performances make this a must-see… and you just know that you’ll have to watch it again before Avengers 4 and Black Panther 2, so why not make sure you have it handy?

With The Girl In The Spider’s Web recently released in cinemas, now is the perfect time to go back to David Fincher’s stylish adaptation of the first Stieg Larsson book about Lisbeth Salander. A hacker who exacts terrible revenge on abusive men, Lisbeth (Rooney Mara) takes time out from her mission to help journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) investigate a 40-year-old murder. With more twists and turns than a slinky, this will keep you guessing even if you’ve read the bestselling book.

Peter Rabbit

If you need something to keep the kids out of trouble, here’s the perfect solution: a character who always gets himself into trouble. James Corden voices the naughty Peter Rabbit, who runs riot through the local gardens until Mr McGregor (Domnhall Gleeson) moves in and tries to stop Peter and friends from eating all his produce. All-out vegetable warfare follows in a manic tale of man versus beast that is sure to keep children entertained even when viewed on a continuous loop. Our money’s on the bunny…

The Mummy

The hardest-working man in Hollywood faces a supernatural threat in this all-action update of the classic horror story. Tom Cruise is a treasure hunter who happens across an ancient sarcophagus and – wouldn’t you know it – something extremely dangerous still lives inside it, in the form of the witchy Sofia Boutella. The action and stunt work are top-notch in a story that doesn’t go exactly where you think it will. Brace yourself for some big shocks!

Spider-Man: Homecoming

People accuse superhero movies of being samey, but this is really more of a teen movie/superhero movie hybrid, and you can’t claim you’ve seen that too many times before. The most joyous Spider-Man film to date, Homecoming sees Tom Holland’s Peter Parker juggle his desire to join the Avengers with, y’know, homework, an academic decathlon, friendships and a first crush. It’s hugely charming, consistently thrilling and quite unlike anything else out there.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

The first one was meant to be Marvel’s “risky” movie but proved a huge space-comedy success. The follow-up goes for greater spectacle, bigger emotion and higher stakes as Starlord (Chris Pratt) meets his long-lost dad Ego (Kurt Russell) while Gamora (Zoe Saldana) faces her vengeful sister Nebula (Karen Gillan). Colourful, crazy and surprisingly moving, this is a sequel that’s every bit as good as its predecessor. As a bonus, it also contains 100% of your daily dose of the adorable Baby Groot, a tiny, tempestuous walking tree.

The Commuter

Ah, the daily grind: shower, coffee, train to work, pulverise bad guys who get in your way. Well, that’s the routine for Liam Neeson anyway, who follows the likes of Taken and Non-Stop with this train-based thriller. He’s an insurance agent presented with a hypothetical dilemma by a fellow traveller (Vera Farmiga) that turns out to be all too real. With suspects dropping like flies all around him, this proves to be a tense thriller – much like taking the 8.04 to Birmingham New Street, really.
