Expect fireworks in Estonia when fierce Madrid rivals Real meet Atlético in this cross-city clash

Two of European football’s strongest sides (and fiercest rivals) meet in this mouthwatering clash

Real Madrid v Atlético Madrid, Wednesday 15 August, 7.30pm, BT Sport 2/HD (CH 532/528)

This weekend, the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League come together to see which team are the true kings of Europe. But, after a typical footballing summer of sackings, transfer sagas and gossip, plenty of questions remain to be answered.

Add to the mix one of Europe’s feistiest cross-city footballing rivalries and you’ve got what is guaranteed to be a fierce, competitive showdown well worth tuning in for.

And with the qualifiers done and dusted, this match-up is a suitably tasty teaser for what awaits, with each and every second of both the Champions League and the Europa League exclusively live on BT Sport.

So as the big night draws near, here is everything you need to know about the 2018 UEFA Super Cup before kick off in Tallinn…

A quick recap

If you’re a Madrid-based football fan, or merely an admirer of Spanish sport, you’re somewhat spoilt for choice when picking a side to support. On the one hand there’s Real Madrid, who recently wrapped up their third successive Champions League title. On the other, you have Europa League winners Atlético, who overcame a tough Marseille side to win the trophy for a second time in eight years. As such, the two qualified to compete to see not only which side is the best side in Madrid, but in European club football as a whole.

New and old faces collide

This match also presents a fascinating clash off the pitch. While the popular, and at times overly exuberant, Argentine Diego Simeone enters his eighth successive season as Atlético’s manager, Real’s newly appointed head coach Julen Lopetegui is facing his first competitive match in charge. It’ll make for an intriguing clash of tactics and temperament, with Lopetegui’s calm exterior and preference for slick passing going head to head with Simeone and Atlético’s distinctive, snarling aggression.

What are the stakes?

While the Super Cup isn’t viewed as a must-win trophy by everybody, this definitely isn’t a match that either side wants to lose. Should Real overcome their rivals, it’ll be their third consecutive win and their fourth overall. But, were Atlético to cause an upset, it would be Simeone’s second Super Cup win as a coach and Atlético’s third since 2010. Regardless of the outcome, the real winner is Spanish football, with this match-up guaranteeing that the trophy will be bound for Spanish shores for a fifth year in a row!
