Whether they were sunning themselves on the Costa del Sol or hitting the gym hard to stay sharp, F1’s star-studded cast of drivers are back after four weeks away.
After ousting longtime F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone following the acquisition of Formula One Group by Liberty Media in late 2016, the brilliantly moustachioed new chief executive Chase Carey promised closer racing and excitement by the bucketload. If 2018 is anything to go by, it’s safe to say they’ve delivered.
Frighteningly fast straights and one of motorsport’s steepest, speediest climbs are on offer at the historic Spa-Francorchamps Circuit – a fitting backdrop for what has been one of the most intriguing title fights in years. To top it all off, both Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes are well suited to circuits with long, sweeping bends and high average speeds, upping their chances of adding yet another Belgian Grand Prix trophy to their respective collections.
But whichever car takes the chequered flag come Sunday afternoon, the race signifies the start of the often chaotic (and always entertaining) second half of the Formula One season. Contractual questions are rife, drivers play musical seats and some are replaced with a faster, fresh-faced alternative before the year is even out. Dubbed “silly season” for good reason, over the next five or so races, literally anything can (and probably will) happen, both on and off the track.
And while this weekend’s winner will no doubt leave Belgium grinning from ear to ear, with eight races left to go in a record season of 21, nothing is set in stone. From the glittering streets of Singapore to the sweltering heat of Abu Dhabi, there are plenty of laps left to race, and everything to play for.
