The LA Chargers take on the Tennessee Titans in the second of this season’s three London games

Batten down the hatches for what’s sure to be a bruising NFL clash on British soil

NFL London: Tennessee Titans v Los Angeles Chargers, Sunday 21 October, 2pm, Sky Sports Action/HD (CH 517/507) + 2pm, BBC Two/HD (CH 102/162). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > BBC iPlayer

When you look at the history of the NFL, the LA Chargers and the Tennessee Titans don’t exactly stand out as serial winners. With precisely zero Super Bowl titles between them, they’re not exactly in Pittsburgh Steelers territory. But last season’s Super Bowl triumph for the Philadelphia Eagles was a shot in the arm for the little guys – even if the little guys in question are all about 6ft 4in and 300lb.

Both the Chargers and the Titans had decent records last season, and they’ll both be looking to push on this Sunday when they go head to head at Wembley for the latest NFL showdown in the UK.

The Chargers have an excellent offence, led by 36-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers (no17, pictured above), a franchise legend who has started every game for the team since 2006. His favourite target is wide receiver Keenan Allen – shut down that route, and you’ve a decent shot at stopping the Chargers’ superb attacking power.

That’s easier said than done, but with one of the league’s stronger defences, the Titans certainly have a chance. Cornerback Malcolm Butler, signed in March from the New England Patriots, has strengthened an already competent defence. Meanwhile, Hawaiian quarterback Marcus Mariota will look to running back Derrick Henry and wide receiver Corey Davis to rack up the points.

This game should be a fascinating indicator of each side’s prospects of success this season. Add a passionate London crowd to the mix and you’ve got yourself an unmissable afternoon of top NFL action.
