Will this hard-fought weekend prove to be this season’s turning point? The Premier League table may look roughly the same, but with late draws and much-needed wins, the picture is now very different.
Read on for our round-up of the action…
1. Result of the weekend
Newcastle 1-0 Watford
“Have a little patience” – so said modern-day philosophers and waistcoat enthusiasts Take That. But no matter how wise the lesson, Magpie fans have had to dig deep this season following seven defeats, three draws and zero wins. But their first three points via Ayoze Pérez’s second-half header means Huddersfield are now the only side in the country’s top divisions without a win.
2. Goal of the weekend
Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal) v Liverpool
Blimey! The in-form French striker has turned it around after a forgettable first season in English football – typifying the BFG-sized strides Arsenal have made under Unai Emery. A sweet pass by super sub Alex Iwobi dragged Liverpool stopper Alisson off his line, but there was still much for Lacazette to do. Some extra trickery brought him the space to curl home to hold Liverpool to a draw.
3. Performance of the weekend
Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) v Southampton
Two goals and two assists in a dominant performance by the England youngster. This season, Sterling is finally shaking off the “consistently inconsistent” label that’s headlined so much of his career. The boy has always had skill in abundance, but having scored six times in nine games in 2018-19, he’s on the way to becoming the full package.
4. Manager of the weekend
Manuel Pellegrini (West Ham)
West Ham had won just two of their opening 10 Premier League matches, yet they had consistently played eye-catching football. Finally, against Burnley, style met substance for Manuel Pellegrini. Before the match, the Hammers boss demanded more from record-signing Anderson. Good job the £42 million winger read the matchday programme, because he netted twice in the 4-2 victory.
5. Team of the weekend
Leicester City’s 1-0 win against Cardiff City was a game where football seemed immaterial. Emotions were visibly high during a minute’s silence for Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and the four other people killed in a helicopter crash last weekend. In the game, Demarai Gray’s goal proved conclusive, and he celebrated by removing his jersey to reveal a t-shirt carrying the message “For Khun Vichai”. For all involved, it was a performance that did their chairman and the whole club proud.
