Twelve months of sporting excellence and it all comes down to an X Factor-style vote on the night. You won’t want to miss SPOTY on Sunday
BBC Sports Personality Of The Year 2018, Sunday 16 December, 7pm, BBC One HD (CH 101/108). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > BBC iPlayer
Who will win sport’s biggest prize? Er, we’ve got no idea! For the first time since the inaugural showpiece way back in 1954, this year’s BBC Sports Personality Of The Year will reveal its contenders on the night of the show. Wait, what?! As if 2018 hasn’t been tense enough…
The silver-haired hero Gary Lineker will be flanked by customary cohorts Gaby Logan and Claire Balding at Birmingham’s Genting Arena as the trio present yet another incarnation of the ever-evolving event. Long gone are the stuffy suits in an even stuffier BBC Television Centre – replaced with actual, real-life members of the public and a few shouty YouTubers to boot.
You might even hear an “Oohh, Anthony Joshua” from the 15,000 in attendance.
And they’ve introduced brand spanking new awards, too. World Sport Star of the Year and the Greatest Sporting Moment of the Year (probably England at the World Cup) will join usual suspects such as Coach of the Year (probably Gareth Southgate at the World Cup) and Team of the Year (probably… you get the idea).
But before you sit down to relive the past 12 months of sporting supremacy, first take this quiz on the lucky ten that we (read: the bookies) reckon Gary and co will be excitedly announcing come crunch time...
