New drama The First is out of this world

Oscar-winner Sean Penn is on a mission to Mars in this unmissable new drama

From House Of Cards creator Beau Willimon comes an adventure that dares to go where no one has gone before…

The First, Thursdays from 1 November, 9pm, Channel 4/HD (CH 104/141). Also available for 7 days in Catch Up > Channels > All 4

While Ryan Gosling’s First Man may be wowing cinema audiences with its depiction of the first humans to go to the Moon, new eight-part Channel 4 series The First casts its eye towards the future by imagining the first humans to go to to Mars.

But as much as this dazzling drama, starring Oscar winner Sean Penn and Natascha McElhone (Solaris), is about humanity’s burning desire to push itself further than ever before, it’s also a highly resonant story about relationships and the complexity of being human.

The first episode jumps straight into the action, with the crew of Providence 1 ready to take off triumphantly for the Red Planet as former mission commander Tom Hagerty (Penn) watches the events unfold.

Things don’t go quite as planned, however, and soon Hagerty – who has plenty of personal demons to contend with, including a strained relationship with his daughter – is presented with the chance of a lifetime…

One of the most ambitious dramas you’re likely to see on TV this year, The First is just as focused on exploring the human condition as it is exploring the possibility of humanity living on Mars. Strap yourself in – it’s going to be one heck of a ride.
