Staying in-in with Virgin Media

On Sunday 13 May, the stars well and truly came out for the Virgin TV British Academy Television Awards. Roman Kemp brought Virgin TV customers closer to the action, as the host with the most on the red carpet and Sue Perkins mastered ceremonies onstage for the second year running with her quick wit and cheek, as well as dancing up a storm with the stars of Strictly.

And there were more must-see moments on the night itself, from This Country star Daisy May Cooper wearing basically an oversized Swindon Town football shirt shouting out her dad Trev, as she scooped the award for Best Female Performance in a Comedy, to a rightful standing ovation for the irreplaceable John Motson as he picked up his Special Award.

Some of the spotlight also shone on the awards presenters, with Hayley Atwell channelling her Agent Carter alter ego and ignoring her autocue when presenting Toby Jones with Best Male Comedy Performance in Detectorists and Greg Davies outshining almost everyone with his speech on gender (and height) inequality. It really was an evening unlike any other!

But don’t just take our word for it. Watch the highlights from the night!

If you missed it, you can catch up on the awards show on BBC iPlayer and also find the red carpet and highlights show in On Demand from 15 May.

So where do we begin with telling you about this year’s winners? We’re going to muscle in first with our very own award – the Virgin TV Must-See Moment, from 2017, of course! Voted for by you – thousands of you, to be more exact – this award goes to the biggest TV moment of last year. The TV moment that you just couldn’t stop talking and tweeting about.

And without further ado, the winner is…

And what a Must-See Moment it is! The heart-wrenching whale mother and her dead calf was a fitting winner from a show that set out to show the beauty of the sea but also the effect we are having on it. Relive the moment again here...

But what about what we should be watching next? Well Vanessa Kirby, winner of Best Supporting Actress for The Crown, told us that she has just started Mindhunter and loves it, and as Peaky Blinders picked up Best Drama Series and we got a sneaky backstage exclusive from series creator Steven Knight that the coming series 5 will be “the best one yet”.

Winners of Best Soap and Continuing Drama, the Casualty cast are really enjoying the remake of Dallas and Israeli drama Fauda, O-T Fagbenle who picked up the Best International Programme award on behalf of The Handmaid's Tale, told us he is enjoying series 2 of Atlanta. Plus, almost everyone mentioned This Country, including a rather surprised Best Lead Actor winner Sean Bean. So, lots to look forward to for next year then!
