Football: Premier League

Arsenal v Newcastle United in the Premier League, live on Sky Sports this month.

With the title and relegation decided, attention turns to the European qualification places. For the first time, the Premier League’s top five are all guaranteed entry to the UEFA Champions League, making the competition for those slots extra fierce. After a poor season (by their unbelievably high standards), Man City now look like securing one of those, and three points against Bournemouth in their penultimate match could confirm that. The Cherries, whose form has dropped after an impressive run, will want to atone for their FA Cup quarter-final defeat by City if nothing else.

Other crucial games you can see live on Sky Sports include Bournemouth v Aston Villa, Arsenal v Newcastle and a pair of Nottingham Forest games. Anything short of a European finish will be a disappointment for Forest after their brilliant campaign so they’ll be gunning for all the points they can gather. Every match kicks off at 4pm on the final day, which is 25 May.

Football: Scottish Premiership

Like Liverpool, Celtic wrapped up the league title early, and the intrigue now comes from who will qualify for Europe and who will go down. Third place goes to the UEFA Europa League and fourth to the Conference League, and Hibs, Aberdeen and Dundee United are fighting over those two places; it doesn’t look good for St Johnstone at the other end, with the Perth club adrift and needing a near-miracle to survive. Aberdeen, who had a tremendous start to the season that they were unable to maintain, take on both the Glasgow clubs live on Sky Sports this month, with the final round of fixtures on 17 May.

Football: Women’s Super League

Chelsea v Liverpool in the Women’s Super League, live on Sky Sports this month.

After securing a phenomenal sixth title in a row, Chelsea will lift the WSL trophy at Stamford Bridge in their final game of the league season. It’s an impressive achievement from manager Sonia Bompastor in her first year in England, especially considering star striker Sam Kerr missed the whole season through injury and there were a number of other absences for the Blues. Sky Sports will keep you up to date with the rest of the WSL action too, as Arsenal and Man Utd battle for second place at the Emirates.

Football: EFL Championship

Four teams qualified for the Championship play-offs – and none is in great form. Third-place finishers Sheffield United lost four of their last seven league matches, Sunderland are coming off five straight defeats, and Coventry and Bristol City sneaked into the final two places by staying just ahead of similarly inconsistent rivals. But that doesn’t matter any more. The prize for getting through this mini-tournament and into the Premier League is estimated at up to £265 million – plus, of course, the chance to play in the world’s biggest league and face superstars of world football every week. Every player will be at 100% effort, considering what’s at stake.

While Sheffield United fans are more used to the Premier League’s glamour – they were relegated only last year – opponents Bristol City haven’t been in the top flight since 1980, and Sunderland and Coventry have both been in League One in the 2020s. After finishing on 90 points, and with two players in the Championship team of the season (including former Coventry midfielder Gustavo Hamer), United appear to be the strongest contenders. But all bets are off when it comes to the play-offs…

Football: EFL League One

Why are 2019 and 2022 significant dates for this year’s League One play-off contenders? Those are the years that Leyton Orient and Stockport County were promoted back into the EFL from the National League. For both clubs to be on the verge of the Championship in 2025 is remarkable, and testament to the possibilities created by smart investment, effective coaching and sheer hard work.

All four of these clubs finished with similar records in League One so it’s hard to choose a likely favourite for promotion, although it’s clear that Wycombe – who dropped off drastically in the second half of the season and lost their last three league matches – will need to turn their form around quickly if they’re to have any chance of making it to the Wembley final, let alone the Championship. But we’d be delighted to see Stockport boss Dave Challinor at a higher level, not only because we’ve got fond memories of his phenomenally long throw-ins (he held the world record!), but also because he’s proved himself an excellent coach with seven promotions in his 14-year managerial career.

Football: EFL League Two

Walsall and Notts County feature in the EFL League Two play-offs, live on Sky Sports this month.

What a season Walsall have had. They went top in December and stayed there till April, despite a bizarre streak that saw them win just two matches between the end of January and the final day. And then, just as they thought a precious victory at Crewe had taken them up automatically, a fluky stoppage-time winner for Bradford pushed them down into fourth. Now they face the play-offs and we wouldn’t blame them if they were dreading it.

Their semi-final opponents, Chesterfield, are coming into the play-offs having lost just one in their last 12, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see them win through to Wembley – but Walsall obviously have the talent to succeed, including excellent defenders Taylor Allen and Connor Barrett, if they can get their heads right. But it‘s Notts County who are bringing the firepower to the play-offs: 36 league goals between their forwards Alassana Jatta and the veteran David McGoldrick, back at his home town club. Who will gain that coveted promotion? We can’t wait to find out. As in the Championship and League One, all the games are live on Sky Sports.

Play-off Semi-final 1st Leg: Notts County v AFC Wimbledon

Football: Bundesliga

Surely only the hardest-hearted Arsenal fan would begrudge Harry Kane the celebrations we’ve seen on social media after, aged 31, he finally claimed some silverware as Bayern were confirmed champions on 4 May. The team are sure to get a wonderful Bavarian reception in their final home game of the season against Mönchengladbach – but there’s still plenty to be decided in the Bundesliga.

Bayern and runners-up Bayer Leverkusen have secured Champions League places but two more are up for grabs, along with the other European slots, while at the time of writing bottom club Bochum haven’t yet been relegated. Eintracht Frankfurt v Freiburg on the final day could be decisive at the top end of the table, while Bochum visit St Pauli and Hoffenheim will hope the Bayern players are still in celebration mode for their potentially crucial match at the PreZero Arena. Cricket: Men’s Internationals

The first Test match of the English summer is always special, and for the first time in more than 20 years England’s opponents will be Zimbabwe, who visit for a single Test at Trent Bridge. Recent results for the men’s team in this format have been mixed: although they have scored series wins over New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies, their flaws have been exposed away from home by India and Pakistan. This will be a great opportunity to get the summer off to a flyer ahead of the India series starting in June. Joe Root and Harry Brook are the world’s top-ranked Test batters, while Gus Atkinson is proving his worth as a strike bowler.

The white-ball team take to the field after the Zimbabwe Test, starting at Edgbaston where they face West Indies in the first of three T20 games, with three one-day matches to follow. Brook has taken over the captaincy of the team and has given franchise cricket a swerve – he withdrew from the IPL’s Delhi Capitals squad – to focus on his England job. It’s a squad full of big hitters and clutch bowlers, although West Indies are always capable of putting in a mighty performance.

Cricket: Women’s Internationals

The England women’s cricket team will be in action, live on Sky Sports this month.

It’s all change for the England women’s team. After a dismal Ashes performance that led to a devastating 16-0 defeat, coach Jon Lewis departed, followed by captain Heather Knight. In came former captain –and, perhaps crucially, Ashes winner – Charlotte Edwards as coach, with Nat Sciver-Brunt appointed as skipper across all forms. NSB is arguably England’s most talented player and certainly among the world’s very best all-rounders, so fans will hope the pressure of captaincy doesn’t subtract from her play.

First up for the new management team is a T20 series against West Indies, followed by three one-day games. Edwards and Sciver-Brunt will be able to rely on seasoned performers like spinner Sophie Ecclestone – named as one of Wisden’s 2025 Cricketers of the Year – and batter Tammy Beaumont against these always dangerous opponents, but there’s no doubt the team as a whole will have to step up if they want to compete with Australia in the years ahead. Follow their progress on Sky Sports this month.

Cricket: Indian Premier League

It’s been a fascinating season so far, with no team managing to dominate – exactly as it should be given the design of the tournament, which includes a selection draft. Delhi Capitals won five of their first six then lost three of their next four, while Mumbai Indians bounced back from a dire start (one win in five) to hoist themselves up the table with five wins in a row.

Royal Challengers have been the most consistent, staying at or near the top of the table with plenty of runs from Indian legend Virat Kohli as well as England’s Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone, with key wickets coming from Krunal Pandya and Josh Hazlewood. But the biggest story so far this year has been Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who made his debut for Rajasthan Royals aged 14 and his third game, proceeded to smash 101 off 38 balls against Guajarat – the second fastest ton in IPL history. We could be witnessing the birth of a new global sporting star.

Can the big-hitting teenager take the Royals to the play-offs and, ultimately, IPL glory? Find out on Sky Sports.

Cricket: Pakistan Premier League

Defending champs Islamabad United have again set the pace in the PSL, winning their first five matches – but they came unstuck against Lahore Qalandars, who handed them an 88-run drubbing, bowling them out for 121 in just 16.5 overs with four wickets for Pakistan star Haris Rauf. Those two teams look set to face off again in the first qualifier, from which the winners go straight to the final, but there’s plenty of time left for twists and turns. James Vince has been in dominant form with the bat for Karachi Kings, including a century off 43 balls against Multan Sultans, and the Kings remain dangerous. Golf

The majors come around fast at this time of year. After last month’s Chevron Championship and Masters, won by Rory McIlroy in emotional scenes at Augusta as he completed the career Grand Slam, the PGA Championship and US Women’s Open are imminent. While McIlroy is arguably the form player among the men’s elite, it feels like that Masters win might have taken too much out of him to repeat the feat just yet – although you never know… Other leading contenders at North Carolina’s Quail Hollow Club include the defending champ Xander Schauffele, world number one Scottie Scheffler, Masters runner-up Justin Rose, Bryson DeChambeau and Ludvig Åberg.

There were incredible scenes at the Chevron Championship, which went to a five-way sudden-death play-off. With the pressure on, you might have expected an experienced major winner like Kim Hyo-joo or Ariya Jutanugarn to prevail, but it was 2024 Rookie of the Year Mao Saigo who clinched it with a birdie. Japanese golf is having a moment, with her compatriot Yuka Saso having won the US Women’s Open last year. Could one of them take the 2025 title at Erin Hills in Wisconsin? The likes of Nelly Korda and Lydia Ko will be trying to stop them, while the highest-ranked British player right now is England’s Charley Hull. See all the action from the majors on Sky Sports along with lots more live golf.

Darts: Premier League

Luke Humphries plays in Premier League Darts, live on Sky Sports this month.

With just a few rounds left until this year’s final night at The O2, Luke Littler has been breaking records left, right and centre. The first player to win five nights. The first player to hit a televised nine-darter and finish on a double 15. An astonishing 141 180s in 13 rounds, smashing his own record of 114 (for the whole tournament) that he set last year. No one else has more than 74. But – yes, there’s a but – Littler has lost quarter-finals to Michael van Gerwen, Chris Dobey and Gerwyn Price, demonstrating that anything can happen on a single night.

The teenager was first to qualify for the finals, but the other qualifiers will know they can beat him. It’s looking like they’ll be Price, Van Gerwen and Luke Humphries at the moment, but Nathan Aspinall and Rob Cross are still in with a shout. In front of 20,000 fans in London, it’s going to be an incredible night of darts as the world’s very best compete for the £275,000 prize.

Motorsport: Formula One

It’s a credit to Max Verstappen’s skill behind the wheel that he’s managing to stay competitive with a Red Bull car that’s evidently a way behind those of his McLaren rivals. He’s been battling for a podium place in every race so far, but it’s clear that he’s no longer the favourite for this season’s drivers’ championship. Team-mates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are leading the way and since McLaren has declined to name either of the as the number one driver, we can expect to see a fiercely fought contest between them – for now at least.

This month, F1 is at two circuits that have been hosting Grands Prix since the 1980s, Imola and Barcelona-Catalunya; in between those it’s what many fans view as the classic F1 race – the Monaco Grand Prix. Sky Sports will bring you every high-octane second of every race live.

Motorsport: IndyCar

The Indianapolis 500, live on Sky Sports this month.

The Indy 500 isn’t just one of the world’s most famous motor races – it’s also heaven for racing fans. The whole event takes almost two weeks, and you can watch all the speed sessions from Tuesday 13 May all the way to the race on Sunday 25 May on Sky Sports. Álex Palou will be eyeing the 109th staging of this venerable contest with a particular hunger: he’s won the last two IndyCar series and is aiming for what Americans like to call a “three-peat” but victory in the Indy 500 has eluded him. Josef Newgarden claimed wins in 2023 and 2024, and the Spaniard will be determined to stop his US rival from securing his own hat-trick.

Ahead of the 500 there’s the Indianapolis Grand Prix to take care of – which takes place on a nearby road circuit– before the season moves on to Detroit.

Rugby League: Super League

No matter which team you follow, you can watch every one of their Super League matches with Sky Sports+. If you’re a Hull KR fan, you’ll be happy, because Rovers have continued the form that took them to 2024’s Grand Final into this campaign, winning eight of their first nine – including some serious wallopings, like the 42-0 win over Salford and a 50-4 victory at Huddersfield.

The only team Rovers lost to in that run were defending champs Wigan, who are lurking menacingly behind them in the table and have some impressive results of their own, with the Red Devils (54-0) among their hapless victims. Jai Field, Jake Wardle and Bevan French have scored a ton of tries and that extra firepower could take them past Hull KR – but Rovers are tenacious. This month they’re at home to Huddersfield and St Helens whether side of a trip to Warrington, while the Warriors face Leigh, Catalans and – gulp, look out – Salford.

Rugby League: Women’s Super League

The 2025 season of the RFL Women’s Super League kicks off this month with the champions York Valkyrie away to Wigan Warriors at the Robin Park Arena. It’s live on Sky Sports, which is showing two further games from the regular season as well as the semi-finals and final in the autumn. Wigan won the first Grand Final in 2018 but they’ve not reached that stage again, losing in four semi-finals, something they’ll be determined to put right. Starting with a tough test like this will be a great measure of whether they’re contenders this year. York, whose team is packed with England internationals like fullback Georgie Dagger and centre Tamzin Renouf, will be hungry to hold on to their crown.

Rugby League: NRL Men’s

Pundits are at a loss to explain what’s happening to Penrith this season, after the Panthers – coming off four premierships in a row – slumped to dead last in the table after a defeat to Manly. “The ladder doesn’t matter till July or August,” was Panthers coach Ivan Cleary’s verdict. Hmmm. They’re on Sky Sports against Newcastle this month as they try to turn their form around. League leaders the Bulldogs are in action in Canberra, with an early kick-off on 10 May, and there’s plenty more NRL action each weekend in the month ahead.

Rugby League: Women’s State Of Origin

The Women’s State of Origin rugby league series, live on Sky Sports this month.

Queensland have won four of the past five Women’s State of Origin series but New South Wales flew out of the traps in this year’s first match, running in six tries and completely dominating the second half in a 32-12 victory. The best part for the Blues? It was in the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, so not only did they give their rivals a good pummelling on their own territory, but they’re already ahead with the remaining matches in NSW – Sydney first and then Newcastle. The Maroons have a tough task ahead, but their recent successes will give them heart.

Rugby Union: Super Rugby Pacific

The Chiefs and Crusaders have been head and shoulders above the competition in this year’s Super Rugby Pacific so far. Hamilton’s Chiefs have been driven by the incredible kicking of fullback Damian McKenzie, who’s far and away the top points scorer, while McKay “Macca” Springer has been running in tries for fun for the Crusaders. The two meet in Christchurch on 10 May for what, three-quarters of the way through the season, has the feeling of a crunch match to determine who ends up top of the table. And there’s plenty more action to come – turn to Sky Sports on Friday and Saturday mornings for extensive live coverage of this high-class competition.

Tennis

Watch tennis star Coco Gauff and many more in action, live on Sky Sports this month.

It’s clay court season 2025, and after singles victories for Casper Ruud and Aryna Sabalenka at the Madrid Open, the top men’s and women’s pros are in Rome for the Italian Open. Jannik Sinner has never won his home tournament: he was forced to pull out with injury after reaching the quarter-final last year, so he’s full of motivation to put in an excellent performance here.

In women’s tennis, after the decline of the Williams sisters, US success was a little thin on the ground – but a trio of new stars are spearheading a revival. Coco Gauff and Madison Keys have both won Grand Slam titles since 2023, and they’re joined in the world’s top five by Jessica Pegula. All three will have high hopes of doing well this spring, with the French Open and Wimbledon in their sights. It’s going to be tough to break the Iga Świątek-Aryna Sabalenka duopoly (seven wins in the past 12 majors between them) but all three are in form. See all the action on Sky Sports as the tours move from clay to grass in June.

Boxing

Mexico’s Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete has held world titles at three weights: super bantamweight, featherweight and now super featherweight, the belt he’s had since beating Liam Wilson in February 2023. Last year’s attempt to step up to lightweight didn’t work out – he lost to Denys Berinchyk – but now Navarrete’s back in the 122lb category to defend his title. Filipino challenger Charly Suarez, who’s unbeaten in his 18 pro fights, will be a tough opponent at San Diego’s Pechanga Arena.

On 7 June the venue is Barnsley’s Oakwell Stadium, giving Callum Simpson hometown advantage as he meets Ivan Zucco for the vacant European super middleweight title. Both the Barnsley-born British and Commonwealth champ and his Italian opponent are undefeated, so something’s got to give. Don’t miss this mouthwatering bout on Sky Sports.

Netball: Super League

London Pulse continue to set the pace at the top of the NSL, although they’ve slowed a little – they beat Manchester Thunder by a mere five points, as opposed to the 20-point-plus thrashings they were handing out in the early stages. First up this month, you can see them at the Hertfordshire Sports Village in Hatfield against London Mavericks, who were one of their unfortunate victims at the start of the campaign, losing 78-42. Then it’s a home match against defending champs Loughborough, who will be determined to eat into the Pulse’s lead at the top of the table with a win at the Copper Box Arena. Keep up with the Super League every weekend on Sky Sports.
