QuickStart self-installation FAQs

Each of our Hubs come with a default WiFi network name (called an SSID) and WiFi password. You can find these on a label on the side or the bottom of the WiFi Hub.

Changing your WiFi network name or password to something more memorable can help everyone in your home connect with ease.

Find out how to change them by following the simple step-by-step instructions on our page below – just tap on the picture of your WiFi Hub to get started.

Change WiFi name and password

  1. Go to your tablet or mobile’s settings.

  2. Select WiFi, then find the Hub’s network name – it’ll match the one on your Hub, for example ‘VM1234563’.

  3. Tap on that network and enter the password (you’ll find this on the Hub, too)

To connect to Windows manually, find the network on your computer first (it’ll be called something like VM123456). Tap on it to connect to it and then enter the WiFi password.

If your computer supports WPS you can use this to connect. Just find the network and connect, then press the WPS button on your Hub until the base light flashes. It should automatically connect.

Click on the WiFi icon at the top of your screen to find the list of available networks, your network will be called something like VM123456. If you can’t see the icon, go to System preferences > Network > WiFi. Then enter the WiFi password and OK to confirm.

Yes, you can if your home has had Virgin Media installed before, which we’ll check when you order. Once you’ve picked your package, all you need to do is choose QuickStart self-installation at checkout.

If we need to send you a replacement TV box, we’ll also ask that you swap the boxes over yourself.

Got any accessibility needs and need support to set up Virgin TV? When ordering online or over the phone just opt for an engineer appointment instead to install Virgin TV or replace a TV box.

All the instructions you need are in the installation guide that came with your TV box. If you’ve lost it, select which TV box you have above and follow the installation video to set things up, or download the installation guide instead.

We’ve made swapping our TV boxes over as simple as possible.

When your replacement QuickStart kit arrives…

  1. Switch off your old TV box’s power at the wall socket, and unplug the power cable from the socket and the TV box

  2. Remove the white coaxial cable from the TV box end – use the spanner in the new QuickStart kit if you need to

  3. Unplug all the other cables from the back of the TV box

  4. You should now be able to remove the TV box, along with its power cableDepending how old or broken the old TV box is, we’ll either ask you to send the TV box and power cable back to us, or to recycle it responsibly. After that, follow the steps included within your new QuickStart kit to install the replacement TV box.

It can vary, but it usually takes 15 to 30 minutes to install any of our TV boxes. You won’t need to watch over things the entire time either, as the installation time includes letting the TV box start up after it’s been connected and turned on.

If your home hasn’t had Virgin Media services before and we send an engineer to set things up, this could take between 30 minutes and 2 hours as they’ll need to install a cable from the Virgin Media network into your home.

The default parental control PIN for our TV boxes is 1234. This adds protection for things like accessing adult content or making in-box purchases.

It’s best for the Virgin Media account holder to change this as soon as they can for extra security and protection against accidental purchases.

Help with Virgin TV issues

The Virgin TV box will be connected to your TV through an HDMI cable, so make sure your TV has at least one HDMI port.

Our TV box kits will come with an HMDI cable along with a power supply cable and adaptor for the TV box. If you’re installing (or already have) our broadband service, you’ll get an Ethernet cable to link the TV box to the WiFi Hub, plus a connector cable and splitter box (except for Stream boxes). There’s also a white coaxial isolator cable which will link the Virgin Media kit in your home to the Virgin Media network.

To see what cables and connections your TV box should come with, tap on the TV box you have above to view its installation guide.

Your WiFi Pod will need up to 24 hours to get settled into its new home, so, try not to move it before then.

The Virgin Media Connect app lets you see your WiFi Pod’s health, signal strength, and speeds. If something doesn’t look right, try plugging the mesh Pod into a few different places around your home to find the best coverage.

To understand what the different lights mean on our WiFi Pods, please see our WiFi Pod lights explained.

When you first plug the WiFi Pod into a socket, the light should pulse for up to 10 minutes. Our WiFi Pod (black) will show a dim white light when it’s connected.

No light at all when you first plug it in? The Pod could be faulty. If you think the light isn’t working, head to our step-by-step WiFi Pod (black) troubleshooting guide.

If you’re visually impaired or can’t check the lights on the WiFi Pod for any other reason, ask a friend or family member to help get you set up. Or, if you’d prefer, one of our technicians can set the WiFi Pod up for you. Just get in touch by using one of our accessible contact options.

If the WiFi Pod’s light is pulsing for longer than 10 minutes, this could mean there’s a problem with set up. If you do think there’s a fault, take a look at our step-by-step WiFi Pod (black) troubleshooting guide.

Yes – with a WiFi Pod (black), WPS allows easier connection to your home network for devices that support it. To connect, hold the WPS button on the front of the Pod until the blue lights appears and follow your device’s instructions.

It’s always a good idea to plug the WiFi Pod in if it’s placed near your device – like your games console. For this, we recommend using a Cat6 Ethernet cable for the best experience.

You might need to turn the WiFi Pod that’s connected to your device off and on again for it to be recognised and added to your network.

The external power supply can be plugged into an extension cable if needed.

Don’t worry, this is normal – the mesh WiFi Pod has a built-in fan to cool it down.
