Protecting mobile customers against cybercrime

New research as we launch security services for Virgin Mobile customers

This month we announced the launch of F-Secure security services for Virgin Mobile customers. It followed alarming research that showed that while most Brits agree that protecting devices against cybercrime is a good idea, few people actually do it. Only 34% have installed anti-virus software on their mobile phone.

Taking into account the 9.4 million British people who’ve already fallen victim to cybercrime, it’s clear to see that mobile security is a must. It’s why we’re offering all Virgin Mobile customers the most advanced and comprehensive mobile security package of any major mobile operator - F-Secure SAFE and F-Secure KEY Premium Password Manager services. To encourage customers to take action and protect their mobile devices, these services are free for the first year on up to five devices, with a 70% saving after that.

As well as reinforcing the need to have cyber security software installed on your mobile, our research highlighted some worrying behavioural trends, particularly towards managing passwords.

17% of Brits admit to storing their passwords on their mobile phone. Of these, over two-fifths save passwords in their Notes app, and almost one in three save them as names in their contacts book like “Nat West” or “John Lewis”. So I’m delighted that as part of the F-Secure services we’re giving Virgin Mobile customers the opportunity to start using a Password Manager – the only mobile operator to do so.

With the threat of cybercrime growing, now’s a good time to review the security of your own mobile device. To help you with that, we asked cyber security expert Dr. Jessica Barker for her top 10 tips. Take a look here.

All Virgin Mobile customers can download F-Secure SAFE internet security on up to five devices for free, including tablets, mobile phones and laptops. The software can be set up on friends and family’s devices as well as the customer’s devices. The software is normally worth £79.99, and is available for free for one year, and 70% off thereafter, via the Virgin Media website.
