50,000 Nottingham homes and businesses to get ultrafast internet boost from Virgin Media

1st September 2015

  • 50,000 homes and businesses in Nottingham are set to benefit from access to ultrafast broadband speeds of 152Mb, twice the fastest speeds available from competitors
  • Consumers and businesses simply sign up online at ‘cablemystreet’ to register
  • Support from Nottingham City Council to overcome rollout barriers, alongside demand from local residents and business owners, has been instrumental
  • Virgin Media has now earmarked over 250,000 UK properties for ultrafast broadband

Virgin Media, the UK’s ultrafast internet provider, today announces that 50,000 homes and businesses in the Nottingham area are expected to receive ultrafast internet connectivity.  The Company has committed to invest £25 million in upgrading homes and businesses across Nottingham to ultrafast broadband.

Following significant demand from people living in Nottingham and the support of Nottingham City Council, homes and businesses in this area will benefit from an ultrafast broadband connection, at least twice as fast as the fastest speeds available from BT, TalkTalk and Sky.

This latest investment by Virgin Media is part of its £3bn programme to connect 4 million UK homes and business over the next five years.  The Company has so far earmarked access to ultrafast broadband for over a quarter-of-a-million homes and businesses in Manchester, Leeds and now Nottingham with more cities to be announced soon.

Virgin Media to connect where demand strongest: simply sign up online at ‘cablemystreet’

Today’s announcement covers premises in the NG postcode which includes Nottingham city centre, suburbs and surrounding towns such as Mansfield, Newark-upon-Trent and Grantham offering many first time access to ultrafast internet connectivity.

Virgin Media is connecting premises prioritised according to demand from consumers and businesses registering at virginmedia.com/cablemystreet and also the cooperation of local authorities who can help to pave the way for further broadband rollout at a quicker pace.

As well as providing ultrafast broadband to consumers, this investment will also support businesses in Nottingham.

Tom Mockridge, Virgin Media Chief Executive Officer said: “The early interest from homeowners, businesses and Nottingham City Council has been instrumental in Virgin Media being able to fast track our network expansion plans in the area. You can now help us to get ultrafast internet access to your home or business premise by registering today at virginmedia.com/cablemystreet.”

Councillor Nick McDonald, Nottingham City Council Portfolio Holder for Jobs, Growth and Transport said: “Better broadband brings huge benefits for the people and businesses of Nottingham.  I welcome Virgin Media’s investment to extend its ultrafast Internet to the city centre and suburbs and encourage communities across Nottingham to identify their demand for broadband.”

Councillor Diana Meale, Chair of the Economic Development Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We welcome Virgin Media’s investment in Nottinghamshire’s broadband network, which will further extend coverage and choice for homes and businesses. The rollout of Ultrafast Internet will complement the County Council’s Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire programme and further strengthen our position as one of the best connected counties in the country – great news for the local economy, jobs and growth.”

Nottingham City Council’s collaborative approach to investment will help to maximise Virgin Media’s regional broadband roll out and demonstrate an appetite to fast-track build. The City’s Permit Scheme – which incentivises works taking place on non-traffic sensitive roads at non-traffic sensitive times – helps create the right conditions for network expansion.
